This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday May 10th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Dave Squillace found a pair of GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES at the County 9 Marsh near Rochester in Olmsted County on May 8th.The marsh is on the south side of county road 9 about a mile and a half east of county road 22. This is a first county record and only the second away from Jackson County in the southwestern part of the state.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was reported from Wildwood Road in Duluth on May 5th. From Highway 61, drive east to Homestead Road, turn north and go one mile. Turn left and stop at 1799 Wildwood Road.

Chuck Krulas and Jeff Stephenson reported a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT on May 6th from Pipestone County in a small park just east of the river and west of Edgerton.

A SUMMER TANAGER was seen on the 4th and again on the 5th in Mower County at the home of Jan and Bill Cook in Austin.

At least ten RED-THROATED LOONS were seen on Lake Superior in Duluth off Park Point on May 9th. Two were seen from the Community Center at 31st St. and the others were seen from the dunes near the Skyharbor Airport. A single LITTLE GULL was seen with more than 300 BONAPARTE'S GULL at Hearding Island on the same day.

Three species of egret were in Kandiyohi County on the 8th. In addition to several GREAT EGRETS, five CATTLE EGRET were near Lake Lillian and a SNOWY EGRET was at the spillway on the east side of Eagle Lake. On the 5th Steve Carlson reported a Snowy Egret at the intersection of Hennepin County road 81 and Territorial Road, between Zachary Lane and Fernbrook Lane. This is near the entrance to Elm Creek Park Reserve. Also on the 5th in Hennepin County, three Cattle Egrets were just south of French Lake in a marsh near the French Lake golf course on the south side of French Lake Road. On the 6th a single Cattle Egret was in a field south of the Sheriff's Youth Ranch in Austin, Mower County. This Ranch is located on 4th St SE near 20th Ave.

Bob O'Connor found a LITTLE BLUE HERON on the 8th in Gooseberry Park, Moorhead, Clay County. The bird was seen along the river's edge and roosting in the trees above the river.

An AMERICAN AVOCET was found on the 5th at the wild rice paddies in the far northeast corner of Red Lake County. On the 6th, 18 Avocets were counted by Bill Marengo in a flooded field northeast of Rogers at the junction of Hennepin county roads 144 and 13. And on the 8th four Avocets were found at the Greenbush lagoons in Roseau County.

A late ROSS'S GOOSE was seen on the 7th along state highway 1 in Pennington County just east of Thief River Falls.

Near Salt Lake in Lac Qui Parle County, Jay Hamernick reported several species of shorebirds on April 30th, including HUDSONIAN GODWIT. He also found several SMITH'S LONGSPURS there on the 29th. And CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS were reported from their traditional breeding areas at the Felton Prairie in Clay County on the 6th.

HOODED WARBLERS returned to Murphy-Hanrehan park in Scott County on the 7th. Also reported there were CERULEAN WARBLER, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, and BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS.
