This is the Minnesota birding report for Sunday May 13th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

This tape is being updated early to report on several unusual species that turned up over the weekend.

Ron Selbitzka found a SAY'S PHOEBE in Lac Qui Parle County on May 9th. It was at the southern end of the dike road of the highway 75 dam just southeast of the town of Odessa. Check especially near the parking lot. Mike Knox reported another Say's Phoebe on May 11th at Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge in Big Stone County along the hiking trail leading off the auto-tour road. It was catching insects in an open area about a quarter of a mile up the trail.

Karol Gresser reported a possible WHOOPING CRANE on May 11th also at Big Stone NWR. She watched as a large, very pale crane settled down in a corn field along state highway 7 just west of the Swift County line.

I have a second-hand report of a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER in extreme southwestern Koochiching County on May 10th. It was found along Minnesota Highway 1 about one mile west of the intersection with U.S. Highway 71. This is about four miles east of Shooks.

I also have a second-hand report of a WESTERN TANAGER in Willmar, Kandiyohi county on May 10th. The bird was apparently seen for several days but now appears to have left the area.

Other birds of note include nesting SWAINSON'S HAWKS at the Chester Woods recreation area of Olmsted County, and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT near the Mayowood House, also in Olmsted County, on May 12th.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday May 17th.
