This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday February 7th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

On the 3rd, one LONG-TAILED DUCK and three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were near the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth in St. Louis County.

At least two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were still near the junction of St. Louis County roads 110 and 16 on the 5th, but no Three-toed Woodpeckers could be found.

Two CAROLINA WRENS are still being seen in Rochester, Olmsted County. Please call the RBA for directions.

A GREAT GRAY OWL was reported on January 31st just south of Hibbing in St. Louis County. Ben Yokel found it just north of the intersection of Salmi Road and county road 16.

I have a secondhand report of a GYRFALCON being seen in Duluth. This bird apparently spends much of its time in Superior, WI, but has been reported in the Duluth harbor near the Cargill grain elevator.

LAPLAND LONGSPURS and HORNED LARKS are moving northward. On the 6th several small flocks were seen in the southern parts of Wright County.

This state-wide birding report is brought to you and financially supported by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU). The MOU is Minnesota's oldest and largest bird club.

The report is composed from reports generously submitted by MOU members and other birders throughout the state. You can support this weekly birding update by submitting your bird reports to Anthony Hertzel at ahertzel@qwest.net or by calling the hotline directly at 763-780-8890 and leaving a detailed message.

MOU members receive this report directly on MOU-net, the club's free e-mail listservice, which is available to anyone interested. For information contact Paul Budde at pbudde@aol.com.

MOU members receive the organization's quarterly journal "The Loon," and the bi-monthly magazine, "Minnesota Birding." For membership information, send an e-mail message to our membership secretary at moumembers@yahoo.com.

The MOU is pleased to offer this service. Thank you, and good birding.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, February 14th.

Send your rare and unusual Minnesota sightings to our electronic hotline: MOU-net@biosci.umn.edu. To learn more, send a message (the message being these two words: info mou-net) to majordomo@biosci.umn.edu.
