As we move into the warmer months of summer, we can expect fewer reports of unusual species. And certainly the number of sightings being called in have decreased over the past few weeks. Things will probably remain relatively quiet for the next month or two as well.
On a Big Day in Koochiching county on June 9, Peder Svingen and Tony Hertzel saw two SPRUCE GROUSE, heard several BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, found a single male NORTHERN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and saw several BOREAL CHICKADEES. Both of these birds were easily found along the ? - Williams Road which heads north off of CR 30 about 8 miles west of Big Falls.
ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS are being found with relative ease at Seven Mile Creek Park in Nicollet county and also at Nerstrand Woods in Rice county and at Murphy-Hanrehan Park in Dakota county.
I have a belated report of a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD from the Carver Park area, but no details were given. Another MOCKINGBIRD was found in Douglas county by Ken LaFond. The bird was in Lake Carlos State Park about 6 miles north of the town of Alexandria.
Bruce Fall heard singing HERMIT THRUSH at Murphy-Hanrehan Park in Dakota county on June 9. This is very far south for this species and it's presence here, seemingly on territory remains unexplained. HERMIT THRUSHES do not normally sing while migrating and this record is only two days earlier than the latest southern date on record. Also at Murphy-Hanrehan was a singing CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER. This is the first summer record from here in 5 years.
At Nerstrand Woods in Rice county, Bruce also reported COOPER'S HAWK, ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and HOODED WARBLER. At least three male HOODED WARBLERS are also on territory in Murphy-Hanrehan Park. A HOODED WARBLER was banded in Washington county near the town of Afton.
Bob O'Conner reports finding a WHITE-EYED VIREO in Winona county on June 9. To get to this area go 1 mile beyond where the pavement ends along Hwy. 74, just north of the town of Elba.
Jay Hammernick found several CONNECTICUT WARBLERS at the Nickerson bog on June 7. The bog is in the extreme NE section of Pine county. He also reports finding good numbers of BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS among the other many species of warblers nesting at Tettegouche State Park in Lake County.
Finally, DICKCISSELS were heard calling near Jordan at the location known locally as Sioux vista, which is about a mile west of the town of Jordan. Though, traditionally this has been a good habitat for DICKCISSEL, this is the first report I have of them this year.
