This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 20, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Dave Cahlander, Mark Ochs, and Paul Budde found a CLARK'S GREBE at the Headquarter's pool at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall County on July 16. The pool is about a half mile east of the Headquarter's building. They also found several adult and juvenile PIPING PLOVERS on Pine and Curry's Islands in Lake of the Woods county also on July 16. Some birds also were observed on Morris Point. This is very encouraging as this species has declined steadily in the past several years and its future status in the state is uncertain.
The two SNOWY EGRETS found the morning of July 9th and reported on last week's tape were present all week, most recently reported by Hap Huber on July 19. The location is on the east side of the Mississippi River in St. Paul, Ramsey County. From Interstate 494 take the Maxwell Avenue exit and drive north to a T. Turn left and follow the road a short distance to where it turns back north again. Drive a quarter of a mile down this road and check the ponds on both sides of the road.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen by Steve Millard on Saturday, July 14. The bird, unexpected at this time of year in Ottertail County, was about 2 miles northwest of Fergus Falls.
Ken LaFonde found two AMERICAN AVOCETS at the East Grand Forks sewage ponds in Polk County on July 15. Interestingly, Carol Schumacher also reports two AMERICAN AVOCETS, these at the Weaver Marshes in Winona County on Saturday, July 15. The birds were seen just past the town of Weaver along U.S. Highway 61 near mile marker 45.
RING-NECKED TURTLE DOVES, almost certainly escapes, are apparently nesting in Burnsville, Dakota County. If anyone has any further interest in these birds, you can leave me a message on this tape.
And finally, RED CROSSBILLS were at Stony Point, St. Louis County, on July 9.
