This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday July 4th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS have been reported from many localities, far more than is usual for this time of year. Two birds were seen by Bob Janssen on Lake Calhoun in Hennepin County on June 19th. Other counties with pelican reports include Rock, Lincoln, Yellow Medicine, Lyon, Chippewa, Douglas, Grant, Kandiyohi, Ramsey, and Wabasha.

A SNOW GOOSE was reported from the Bass Ponds area of Hennepin County by Bob Holtz on June 20th. Summer records of Snow Goose in Minnesota are somewhat unusual.

Two COMMON MOORHENS were discovered at Minnesota Lake in Meeker County by Dan Floren on June 24th. Another COMMON MOORHEN was seen at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County on June 29th, but no specific details or directions were given.

A pair of SANDHILL CRANES was reported north of the town of Kilkenny in Le Sueur County, and on June 26th another pair was just south of the town of Carver in Carver County.

A WILLET was also at the refuge on June 29th. The bird was along county road 7 on the western side of the refuge near where the pavement ends and becomes a dirt road.

A FERRUGINOUS HAWK was at the Felton Prairie on July 1st. Tony Hertzel reported the bird 2.5 miles north of County Road 26 and 3 miles east of state highway 9. This is possibly the same bird reported from this general location on June 15th. Another FERRUGINOUS HAWK was found by Mark Stenssas on June 9th in Traverse County along County Road 4, about 2 miles north of the town of Browns Valley.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen near the junction of 87th and Zane Ave in Brooklyn Park on June 23rd. Two WESTERN KINGBIRDS were seen near the southwest corner of the Best Buy Corporate Headquarters building in Eden Prairie on June 27th.

At least one PRAIRIE WARBLER is still being seen and heard in northern Anoka County. Look along East Bethel Blvd, about a third of a mile north of county road 26.

The HENSLOW'S SPARROW in Chisago County first discovered on June 15th was seen again on June 20th. The location is in a hay field one mile west of county road 8 along county road 63. This field is marked no trespassing, and birders are asked to please stay on the road. And Steve Roman reports observing five HENSLOW'S SPARROWS at O.L. Kipp State Park in Winona County on June 24th.

A first county record LARK SPARROW was seen at Camp Ripley in Morrison County on June 27th.

Finally, Tom Tustison is doing research on vireos and warblers in Minnesota and is requesting information on the following species: Philadelphia Vireo, Northern Parula, Orange-crowned, Magnolia, Cape May, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Blackburnian, Palm, Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, Connecticut, Mourning, Wilson's, and Canada warblers, and Northern Waterthrush. Specifically, Tom is looking for July records and please include the date of the sighting and the county. You can call Tom at 612-699-8551.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday July 11th. If you have birds to report, please leave your name, location, phone number and a brief but specific message.
