Annual Hawk Totals

Since 1972 the hawk totals are a composite of the hourly counts from the Main Overlook and the Banding Station. For example, if during a certain hour the Overlook records four American Kestrels and the Banding Station counts six, the lower total from the Main Overlook is disregarded and the official count for that hour is six.

Beginning in 1983, unidentified hawks have been disregarded from the season totals. An unidentified hawk noted at the Main Overlook might be identified the Banding Station, for example, and it usually is not possible to cross-reference these individuals to determine a composite total.
