Also, there were 10 pectoral sandpipers, 4 lesser yellowlegs, 9 greater yellowlegs. At Rileys Lake near the Winona airport, 3 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS, and 1 CLIFF SWALLOW. Found 8 species of sparrows, including 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW. Only one Am. tree sparrow. Swamp sparrows were thick. Also, 3 TUFTED TITMICE along Old Goodview Road. The birds were observed in flight first and then sitting in a tree next to the Gray house in the NE corner of the intersection. They were calling, but hard to hear over all the exotic birds being raised at the farm at that location. This was at 12:30 - 1:00pm. We stopped at the entrance of the Sleepy Eye recycling area which is on the north side of the sewage ponds, and saw one adult male Great-tailed Grackle at 5PM. It then flew over to the fence line that separates the sewage ponds from the recycling area and was joined by another adult male Great-tailed Grackle on the grass that lines the sewage pond. The birds were identified as Great-tailed Grackle based on their size in comparison to the Common Grackle that were present, their coloration, tail shape, beak size and the vocalizations they made. I was unable to take photographs since the recycling area was closed, and the birds moved around quite a bit. One male appeared to be staking territory just south of the marsh area on the north side of the recylcing area. Looks like similar habitat to the area in Jackson County where they have been present for the last few years. My wife and I had a little cabin fever so decided to do a "mini" big day from noon until 6 p.m. The birding was great; the weather was not with lots of drizzles and misting. We ended up with 87 species and here are the highlights: 4 grebes (mostly on Swan Lake in Nicollet county) including a Horned Grebe on a small pond along Hwy 12 about a mile north of Hwy 14 in Nicollet county 16 ducks including Canvasbacks, all 3 mergansers, Redhead, and many dabblers (Lake Wita, Swan Lake, Oakleaf Lake, Gilfillin Lake) 4 gulls (Ring-billed, Bonaparte's, and Franklin's seen in the fields at the intersection of Hwys 26 and 27 in Blue Earth County and a lone 2nd summer Herring Gull along Hwy 22) Both species of yellowlegs and Wilson's Snipe were found at the boat launch on the east side of Swan Lake feeding in the grass. Greater Yellowlegs were also seen at the Horned Grebe location mentioned above. 6 hawks including multiple harriers and a Cooper's on a nest in Mankato. 9 sparrows were seen including my first Vesper of the year, White-throated and a single Lincoln's Sparrow. Lastly, we had a single Canada Goose with partial albinism that gave it the look of a blue-phase snow goose. This bird was seen just west of the entrance to the Lake Wita boat launch on the north side (located off of Hwy 2) Mankato Bird Club's waterfowl trip the day before also had Forster's Tern and Pectoral Sandpipers so migration is happening in spite of the weather. At this same location on Friday = our scouting group found 64 White-fronted Geese with a few Snow Geese = mixed in. Highlights for Sunday was finding two Great-tail Grackles at = Grover's Lake. The trip ended at the Heron Lake Sewage Ponds at 2:00 = pm. Overall migration was dull even with stiff south winds and very warm = temps. The landbirds were in small numbers and hard to find. The day actually began on Friday when Kim Risen, Cindy Butler, Tom = Auer,=20 Jake Musser and I scouted out Jackson County and found my Minnesota = "lifer"=20 Great-tail Grackle at Grover's Lake.

The Highlights of the day were seeing a mix flock of = White-fronted=20 Geese, Snow Geese and Canadian Geese flying over our heads at Blue = Mounds, =20 13 species of ducks, several sightings of Gray Partridge, and both = species of=20 Yellowlegs and some Pectoral Sandpipers at the Luverne Sewage = Ponds. The=20 most interesting find was the Great Horned Owl nest in Pipestone Co. =

Saturday night I reserved a room for us at the Magnolia Steak = Restaurant=20 where we had a few laughs and updates on the Minnesota Golden Gopher = NCAA final=20 hockey game. ( Thanks Ben) Kim Risen took a small group to look = for=20 Screech Owls at the wooded lot east of the sand pit ponds near the=20 park. Kim found two Screech Owls calling for the=20 group!

Sunday we met at the same location in Luverne and headed east to = Jackson=20 County. At the intersection of Jackson Co. 86 and Interstate 90 we = saw two=20 banded Trumpter Swans for the list. At this same location on Friday our = scouting=20 group found 64 White-fronted Geese with a few Snow Geese mixed in. = Highlights for Sunday was finding two Great-tail Grackles at Grover's=20 Lake. The trip ended at the Heron Lake Sewage Ponds at 2:00 = pm.

Overall migration was dull even with stiff south winds and very = warm=20 temps. The landbirds were in small numbers and hard to find. = The=20 group was a ton of laughs and this group brought the best homemade = cookies I=20 ever eaten! We took our time birding and answered a lot of = questions and=20 most of all had a lot of fun while birding.

Both species frequently foraged close to the ground. Even in the flooded woods, they checked for insects close to the water line. Bass fishing was pretty good in the shallows, casting to the base of trees with crank baits in the flooded parts. I wondered if Bass & Northern Pike took advantage of spring migration. Do fish ambush warblers and other songbirds as they push through the area in waves? The Latin name for Northern Pike is Esox lucsius, the water wolf! I checked the stomach contents of two Northern & one fine Bass when I got home....all empty. There is an active Bald Eagle's nest in Stillwater in a tree less than 10 yards off of highway 36. Hwy 36 gets hundreds if not thousands of vehicles a day in this area. There are houses within 150 yards of the nest. I first noticed the nest last Oct/Nov with the eagles in and around it. The pair of eagles appeared to stay in the area all winter. The bird was with a great egret and seemed to be associating with it, i.e., when the great egret took off, the snowy took off and flew with it. The two birds were standing in the wet culvert next to the road. We were able to stop and get a good look at them before they flew off. They were approximately 25 feet away from us. I'm very familiar with snowy egrets from when I lived in Massachusetts, and of course a snowy is unmistakable. The yellow feet were completely visible when it was standing in the wet, but trodden down, grass, as was the black bill. And of course it was much smaller than the great egret.--Mark Davis -- Mark A. There were also a couple of Savannah sparrows mixed in with the Field and Song flocks in the trails here, and a Winter Wren by the wooden footbridge over the stream between Little Bass and Big Bass pond. Many Swamp sparrows singing in the marshes. At Old Cedar I saw my first Blue-gray Gnatcatcher of the season (thanks for sending 'em on up, Carol!). The Blue-winged Teals, Lesser Scaup, Northern Shovlers, and Pied-billed Grebe were also in the ponds. In the muddy flooded fields were Greater Yellowlegs, Killdeer, and lots of Wilson's Snipe. Eastern Meadowlark, Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Pheasants, Song and Savannah Sp, Tree Swallows, and a Northern Harrier. When I left the ponds at 9:30 the Cinnamon Teal was still there. A pair of RED-THROATED LOONS was on Little Rock Lake in Benton County on the 22nd. The birds were seen from Benton Beach County Park on the north end of the lake but were gone by the afternoon of the 23rd. To get there, take U.S. Highway 10 north from St. Cloud to the town of Rice. At the stop lights, turn right then immediately take another right onto Benton County Road 2. Go about two and a half miles and turn right into the park. Follow the road to the boat access. On the 21st a WHITE-FACED IBIS was reported from Lino Lakes in Anoka County. It was seen in a flooded field at the southwest corner of the intersection of 12th Avenue and Birch Street. At the Gilman sewage ponds in Benton County, Herb Dingmann reports finding a CINNAMON TEAL on April 23rd. The ponds are located half a mile southwest of Gilman on Benton County Road 3, and the teal was in the back pond. A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was at Dobbin's Creek in an area known as Sutton Park in the east part of Austin, Mower County. The location is near the small creek that flows out of East Side Lake and the bird was seen in the stretch between the second bridge and the railroad trestle. Interesting was the YELLOW RAIL reported on the 18th from Carlos Avery WMA in Anoka County. It was heard about 200 yards south of the headquarters driveway on the east side of Zodiac St. NE. On the 18th a VARIED THRUSH showed up for one day at the home of Collette Leonhardt in Kelliher, Beltrami County. This is about 45 miles north of Bemidji. Another Varied thrush was seen in Hubbard County three miles south of Park Rapids near the Straight River on the 19th. A pair of GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES is being reported from the Sleepy Eye sewage ponds in Brown County. They've been seen here since at least the 18th. A few CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS were seen along the Longspur Road at the Felton Prairie in Clay County on the 18th. Other recent spring arrivals include WESTERN GREBE, GREEN HERON, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, VIRGINIA RAIL, SORA, WINTER WREN, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, BROWN THRASHER, CHIPPING SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, SWAMP SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW. My fieldguides only say "mostly silent" and female grunts and male squeeks. But nothing that resembles an actual "call" I was recording about 12-15 Bufflehead with other "usual suspects" in the neighborhood. The ducks were about 200 yards out which is normal for these ducks to sit in the middle of deep water. The wind was 15+ gusting over 25 and it was a challenge to keep my large dish on target. Linked, is what I recorded. I kept my sample in stereo to assist in ear filtering out the swamp grass. I can say I have not heard this sound before. Can anyone tell me if it is a Bufflehead or if it is known to you or unknown to you? The sound I am talking about is the 5 flute tones at the same pitch. Recorded in Central MN yesterday. This evening I noticed a white-breasted nuthatch on the ground at the base of our big boxelder tree, pecking vigorously at something. At first I assumed he was working on a fallen piece of bark, but he was so enthusiastic about it that I picked up the binoculars to get a better look. It turned out that the "bark" had a tail... it was a dead deer mouse. Now, I can't be sure the bird was eating meat from the carcass, but when I went outside to look, there were no obvious invertebrates on the body -- though even if there were, that's not the variety of invertebrates I'd think of nuthatches as eating. The location is 6.4 miles north of Audubon 1/4 mile SE of the intersection of CR 13 and CR 106. Please remain on the road for viewing. The Thoreson's in rural Polk County reported that MOURNING DOVE, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, CEDAR WAXWING, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, SONG SPARROW, and FOX SPARROW have returned to that area. I found a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER at Wetland , Pines, and Prairies Audubon Sanctuary on Monday. Lori Becker reported from the sanctuary that an AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET were seen at the sanctuary on April 19th, while GREAT HORNED OWL, and CHIPPING SPARROW were seen on the 23rd, and a BROWN THRASHER appeared on the 24th. The most exciting Marshall County sighting was sent in by Larry Johnson, who reports that there are now over 3000 SANDHILL CRANES massed in a field south of Old Mill State Park. At Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge, he saw nearly all species of ducks that are to be expected at this time, and in addition there were WILSON'S SNIPE and MARBLED GODWITS there.=20 Pennington County birds seen this week include COOPER'S HAWK, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, FOX SPARROW, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. In Clay County, Bob O'Connor reports that at Felton Prairie the birds that all go to see are returning- he found 59 GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS, MARBLED GODWITS, SANDHILL CRANES, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, and CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS there on April 18th. A COMMON LOON was on Flora Lake in Hitterdahl, and a GREAT EGRET at Hotsie Lake. Connie Norheim found 5 AMERICAN PELICANS at Lake Marie along with several species of ducks. Janet Johannson reported two pair of TRUMPETER SWANS on the north shore of Big Detroit Lake on Saturday, April 19th. Mike Murphy says there are GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS on a new lek at Hamden Slough NWR. The lek is located in the dry bottoms of Hamden Lake about 200 yards from CR 106. The location is 6.4 miles north of Audubon 1/4 mile SE of the intersection of CR 13 and CR 106. Please remain on the road for viewing. The Thoreson's in rural Polk County reported that MOURNING DOVE, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, CEDAR WAXWING, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, SONG SPARROW, and FOX SPARROW have returned to that area. I found a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER at Wetland , Pines, and Prairies Audubon Sanctuary on Monday. Lori Becker reported from the sanctuary that an AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET were seen at the sanctuary on April 19th, while GREAT HORNED OWL, and CHIPPING SPARROW were seen on the 23rd, and a BROWN THRASHER appeared on the 24th. The most exciting Marshall County sighting was sent in by Larry Johnson, who reports that there are now over 3000 SANDHILL CRANES massed in a field south of Old Mill State Park. At Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge, he saw nearly all species of ducks that are to be expected at this time, and in addition there were WILSON'S SNIPE and MARBLED GODWITS there.=20 Pennington County birds seen this week include COOPER'S HAWK, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, FOX SPARROW, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. Katie Haws reported from Beltrami County that she observed 15 COMMON MERGANSERS, and many COMMON GOLDENEYE on Blackduck Lake. Pat Rice took a trip to the rice paddies of Clearwater County where she saw thousands of TUNDRA SWANS, 13 species of ducks, one TREE SWALLOW, and 4 species of sparrows. It was 5-10 feet from my SUV!!! Windows were open and I was in awe hearing the most bizarre sounds I have ever heard come from a bird. Clucks, descending whistles and that weird sucking/flushing sound had me stunned. I watched the bird amble its way across the road and pick around the marsh/road edge for a good half hour. It was last seen on the far eastern edge of the marsh grabbing corn from the field on the south side of the road. Also of interest: Flock of about 30 Yellow-headed blackbirds, Mature Bald eagle who stole the prey of a successful Male Northern Harrier. This is the same location that many birders try for Smith's each fall. The birds were seen from the SE corner of the preserve where the grass is relatively short due to grazing. The birds spent most of their time out in the plowed fields surrounding the preserve, but were rather easily picked out when they took wing by their flight call and the fact that they were in beatiful alternate plumage. There were also a hundred or so Lapland Longspurs in area as well, which made for a nice study. Message-ID: This is kind of off-topic as this observation was based in Costa Rica, but = I was wondering if anyone had seen anything like it in Minnesota. This is = absolutely incredible behaviour...Accounted below: "I was touring up Ca=F1o Harold [Tortuguero NP] by electric motor just = fifty meters upstream from two big Almendro trees (Dipteryx panamensis) = when I observed, along with two Swiss-Italians I was guiding for, a lone = Green Heron (Butorides virescens) standing on some water hyacinth and = looking into the water. We stopped to silently observe it from a short = distance. It was looking down into the water. Floating in the current = directly in front of the heron was a cricket which was on its back with = its legs moving in the air. It was unable to right itself and was probably = injured. To my surprise the heron did not pick it up to eat it but was = observing it closely as it floated slowly by. Suddenly when the cricket = appeared to be almost out of reach the heron plucked it out of the water = and placed it back in the water just slightly upstream. It again observed = it closely as it floated by. After repeating this four or five times it = suddenly lunged its head forward at the cricket catching a small fish = which had come up to eat it. It then quickly swallowed the fish.=20 I asked my clients if it would be all right to continue observing the = heron for a few minutes more and they agreed as they were just as = surprised as I was to have witnessed this. A short time later the bird flew over to the other side of the river and = landed on the weeds on the far side. I followed it with the electric motor = and we came upon it again within a short distance of less than ten meters. = The heron was walking back away from the river towards the trees. I was = observing it with my binoculars when it suddenly lunged forward to catch = what turned out to be another cricket. I could clearly see through the = binoculars that it was crushing the cricket repeatedly in its bill. It = walked out to the edge of the river and placed the still live-and-kicking = cricket in the water. It repeated the plucking and replacing routine with = the cricket in the water and after a few tries caught another fish!" Has anyone seen anything like this before? The heron was standing on a log in the water and repeatedly picked up the piece of leaf and dropped it to the water's surface. When an unsuspecting small fish came up to check it out - snatch and gulp! I was so amazed at what I witnessed, I did some research, and sure enough, green herons are known to "go fishing." On the=20 way home Sunday from Salt Lake I took County Route 4 through Traverse = Co., I=20 found some American Golden-Plovers at a stop on the corner of CR 4 and = county rd=20 53 (it's C-4 on page 42 of DeLorme) the area is labeled "ARTHUR", = CR 4=20 basically left turn north and then right back east, there is a WPA right = on the=20 south corner, there were about 30+ birds feeding in the short grass = about 40=20 feet off the gravel, there were two that were in breeding plumage and I = got=20 great looks at them with my car window mounted = scope..

On Sunday while cleaning up after the First Communion party I = saw=20 three White Pelicans fly over my yard.

Today (Monday) while doing some quick birding along Park Point I = noticed=20 many huge rafts of Greater Scaup on the bay side. Also I found = several=20 scattered Gadwalls and a small flock of Widgeons near the bus turn = around.

Other than that the birding is rather slow in Duluth and there = is a=20 lot of ICE yes ICE on the lake side of Park Point. Reminds me of = seeing a=20 Avocet once in late May on one of them ice chunks.

Chipping Sparrows finally made its arrival here in West = Duluth.

Message-ID: This morning Susan Schumacher and I went out to Murphy Hanrehan Park in Scott Co birding. We were walking on the trail close to Hanrehan Lake, and enjoyed the beautiful Yodel and Wails of a pair of Common Loons. We had 4 Red-shouldered Hawks circling overhead in courtship behavior, and were very happy to hear all their vocalizations. Also a pair of Broad-winged Hawks whistled threw several times, as well as seeing perched Cooper's Hawks preening. The big push of Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, and Yellow-rumped Warblers kept us very busy focusing everywhere. There were Orange-crowned Warblers, Palm, and then the black spotted undertail coverts of the Black-and-white Warbler bending over creeping around a tree. Several more came by in a wave, and just kept a movin' through with the rest of the group. We had a singing Male Eastern Towhee out in the open, a Hermit Thrush, Swamp and Field Sparrows, Eastern Meadowlarks, and Bluebirds. Message-ID: This afternoon from 3-4 I watched the Rock Wren with Terry Brashear at the Acacia Cemetery. The bird was observed from the main parking lot facing the buildings. The Rock Wren would come to the edge of the building roof then disappear quickly. It flew across to the other building roof, and would pop up sporadically in full view for brief spurts, then disappear again. The bird never vocalized while we were there, but would show himself often. It was still there when I left at 4, and I was very happy it stuck around all day. Among them was a Black Vulture that was seen well, but briefly as it flew low over the tower at 4:40. Other migrant included two Swainson's Hawks and three immature Golden Eagles. There were 14 species raptor counted not including the local Peregrine seen buzzing some of the migrant raptors. Also of note were 85 Common Loons also migrating today. I will try to post the numbers so far for the season in the next couple day. A first county and location record. What I found were two doves that were doing some mating things that I had previously only seen in Caledonia (Houston County.) Caledonia is the site of, I believe, the only confirmed nesting in Minnesota. I think it is possible that these birds are nesting in Appleton based on the way they acted. They seem to hang around the old metal bridge, the elevator and the closed gas station next door. Both of these structures are right accross the river from the park that Andrew originally found the bird in. I was unable to find a nest and when one of the birds flew over the gas station and proceeded to disappear I suspected that the nest may be on the roof of the old station. Especially since the other bird then sat in a tree next to the station till I left. But it is all speculation till somebody finds the nest or young birds. Keep your eyes open and fill the rest of us in. There were fifty or more people participating. An exact number is unavailable as some participated only in some of the events and others were only out on the roads and paths birding. Thanks to the people of Marietta and the Sons (and perhaps more important: the daughters) of Norway (and Madison) for their hospitality. Also thanks to Goody Larson, Ken & Mary Lou for hosting a bunch of us at the farm. Weather was incredible with mostly clear skies. The nights were for the most part comfortable in the tent. This year we were not buried like last year. We only had a minor sprinkle on Saturday afternoon. The stars were brillant and the frog chorus was awesome. A total of 120 species of birds were tallied on Saturday, not counting the recently introduced Prairie Chickens, which were found by several people. No exciting reportable birds were found, although on the day before a Eurasian Collard Dove was found in Appleton and a Piping Plover was found near Ortonville. None of the participants were aware of the Plover. Some of the highlights: Ring-necked Pheasants were everywhere. By the end of the weekend there were less. Some of the participants experienced why there were so many Northern Harriers when one took down a Pheasant. An American Bittern was exceptional cooperative, freezing in close. American Pipit doing its thing approximately 30 feet from a crowd. Good looks at several shorebirds, most notably Bairds and Dunlin. The only Harris Sparrows were observed from less than 20 feet at Goody's farm before we even got to breakfast. Afternoon conditions interfered with extracting a Clarks from the dancing Western Grebes on Thelke Lake. Both Eared and Horned Grebes were difficult to find. Salt Lake was not a disappointment with the best waterfowl and shorebirds. Many birders missed the Ross' and White-fronted Geese mixed with the Snow Geese. Few warblers were found. Only a handfull of birders found Yellow-rumps, but Bill Unzen, a local birder still in high school from Bellingham was able to find four species. The only Northern Cardinal was found before going in for breakfast in Marietta. The birder was so unimpressed, he didn't even write it down. He was unable to find the Great-tailed Grackle. I was fortunately able to get down there later in the afternoon and that evening. In the evening (about 7:30) I inadvertently flushed the Bittern which flew right over my car. On the far shore an adult Bald Eagle perched in bare bleached tree. At the 140th Street marsh most of the migrating waterfowl has already moved on leaving several pairs of Blue-winged Teal, Gadwell, and Ring-necked Ducks, which were paired and hopefully considering settling in. Water levels were high and habitat was poor for shorebirds. Clay-colored Sparrows were calling from nearby trees. Elsewhere I found the season's first gossling (Canada) in Woodbury south and west of I-494 and I-94. In New Hope south of Winnetka and CR9 (Rockford) it appears that Ring-billed Gulls maybe tending nests. It seems to like the north side by the Biffs portable=20 "facilities". Other birders arrived as I was leaving. The bird was = not=20 visible at that time.

On the way home (gotta work!) stopped to see a Black = Crowned=20 Night Heron at Pickerel Lake along Lilydale Rd. It was 30 ft from the = road and=20 just SE of the RR tracks that cross over the road. It was hard to see = because=20 there were so many Yellow rumps flitting all over the place!! I saw a = pair of=20 Black Crowns here last year.
