Well I made a loop around Dakota county this morning. Got to 140th
around 7am and saw a smattering of ducks including:
American Widgeon,
Green-Winged and Blue-Winged Teal
Gadwall
Northern Shovelers,
Ring-Necked Duck,
Lesser Scaup, etc
Also saw 7 Wilson's Snipe feeding in the mud flats on the far western
side of the pond. No other shorebirds besides a few random Killdeer.
Down at 180th around 8am there were nearly a thousand ducks of many
varieties. Unfortunately, at 8:05 with a gust of wind they all at once,
minus the hundreds of coots, decided to depart.
In the short time I was able to scan the waters, noticed both teal,
gadwall, lots of shovelers, etc again.
Lake Byllesby, which I also visited yesterday along with New Prague
Sewage Lagoons (lots of ducks, including the above as well as bunches of
Redheads and Canvasbacks.No Ross's Geese), probably is the lowest I have
ever seen it. It will be phenomenal for shorebirds this spring if we
don't go through a wet period. There were many hundred Shoveler there
this morning along with Blue Winged Teal, Green-Winged Teal, and 11
Pectoral Sandpipers, which left before I did. I would imagine with the
strong southerly winds, the lakes and marshes around will be changing by
the hour as things arrive and depart with the winds.
