Today Rick Hoyme and I birded some of the southwest counties, mainly for =
shorebirds. Our best spot of the day was at the Heron Lake sewage ponds =
in Jackson County. To our delight we found about 10 Red-necked =
Phalaropes mixed in with the other shorebirds. Other species:
-Greater Yellowlegs
-Lesser Yellowlegs
-Pectoral Sandpiper
-Baird's Sandpiper
-Semipalmated Sandpiper
-Least Sandpiper
-Spotted Sandpiper
-Semipalmated Plover
-Killdeer
Heron Lake was higher than we had hoped. There were mudflats =
surrounding most of the lake, but they weren't yet extensive enough to =
be really good. Most of the birds were too far out to see from the few =
access points.
The other good shorebird spot turned out to be at the Sleepy Eye sewage =
ponds in Brown County. Present were:
-Lesser Yellowlegs
-Pectoral Sandpiper
-Stilt Sandpiper
-Short-billed Dowitcher
-Least Sandpiper
-Semipalmated Sandpiper
-Solitary Sandpiper
-Killdeer
Good birding!
