This afternoon the New Germany/Crane Creek area of NW Carver County was =
booming with shorebirds, with 14 species and over 1,000 individuals =
present. The best spot was the large pond to the south of Cnty. Rd. 30, =
which can be best viewed on the west side of Yale Ave. Here there were =
extensive mudflats literally covered with shorebirds. Present were:
-Semipalmated Plover=20
-Killdeer
-Greater Yellowlegs
-Lesser Yellowlegs=20
-Solitary Sandpiper=20
-Spotted Sandpiper
-Least Sandpiper
-Semipalmated Sandpiper
-Baird's Sandpiper
-Pectoral Sandpiper
-Stilt Sandpiper
-Short-billed Dowitcher
-Red-necked Phalarope
-Wilson's Phalarope

There were also several Franklin's Gulls and hundreds of Great Egrets =
around the mudflats. These ponds should attract shorebirdsfor at least =
a few weeks yet, and hopefully longer if rain is on the way. Good =
birding!
