This Breeding Bird Survey runs northward from a point east of Green Lake near
Spicer north into southern Stearns County near Lake Henry and Spring Hill.
Terrain is rolling with a few moderate quality wetlands, 5-15% hay, grass, and
CRP (guesstimate), and many farmsteads with small woodlots and plenty of corn
and bean deserts. Run with Mary Soler, USFWS biologist for the Litchfield
Wetland Management District. 64 species. No real rarities but treats included 2
Dickcissel, 1 Marbled Godwit, 2 harriers, 4 Kestrels, a handful of Western
Meadowlark, a small flock of Brewer's Blackbird (same locale as last
year--species tends to have small colonies on edge of range), only moderate numbers of
Pheasants, NO Bluejays or chickadees, fair numbers of crows, Orchard and
Baltimore Orioles, about 8 or 9 Rose-breasted Grosbeak (numerous this year), and a
fair-sized Cliff Swallow colony (75+ birds) near Regal Prairie TNC Preserve.
Bob Russell, Dakota County
