This is the Duluth Birding Report for Wednesday, November 12, 2003,
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The SAGE THRASHER in the municipal campground in Grand Marais was reported
again on the 11th by Craig Mandel. No recent reports of either the Mountain
Bluebird or the Varied Thrush in Grand Marais, nor of the Spotted Towhee in
Duluth.

Dave Carman reported a GYRFALCON from Hawk Ridge on the 8th.

Bob Dunlap reported three GREAT GRAY OWLS from the jct. of Pietz's Road and
Cty Rd 18 in Aitkin County on the 8th. Mike Hendrickson reported a GLAUCOUS
GULL from Mille Lacs Lake on the 8th. This would be a first county record
for Aitkin County.

Sea ducks have been reported from several locations over the past week,
including BLACK SCOTERS from Good Harbor Bay, Tofte, Silver Bay, and Park
Point; WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS from Taconite Harbor and Park Point; and
LONG-TAILED DUCKS from Knife River.

Two more RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS were found in Duluth this week in the 1300
block of Minnesota Ave on Minnesota Point. Jim Barrett reported that a
Red-bellied continues to visit his yard in Morgan Park. Winter finches
continue to move into Duluth. Yesterday, Jonas Benson reported two RED
CROSSBILLS from 5th St and 16th Ave E.

The Duluth Christmas Bird Count will be held on Saturday, December 20th.
