All,

Went up to Duluth by way of Mille Lacs today, and ran into almost as
many birders as birds (Amazing how one can predict who one will see
based on the weekend it is.ran into Jeff Stephenson, Chuck Krulas, John
& Chris Hockema, Dedrick Benz, Mike Hendrickson, Jerry Pruitt, Barb &
Denny Martin, etc.what a crowd!). 40th was quite nice, with many
sparrows represented, including at least 2, possibly 3 separate Nelson's
Sharp-tailed Sparrows. Other sparrows seen included Leconte's,
Lincolns, Song, Vesper (By others, not me), Harris (By others, not me),
White-crowned, White-throated, Clay-colored and Savannah. Also saw
multiple Lapland Longspurs, but no Smith's :-(. Near the SW corner,
there was a Buff-breasted Sandpiper and an American Golden Plover.
Later on I went up to Hawk Ridge. It was slow, but they had 2
Sharp-Shinned hawks and a Merlin that they had caught/banded, that they
brought down to get "Adopted". Merlin's are absolutely spectacular when
seen so closely. I wish I could have adopted it, but someone beat me to
it. Other hawks overhead included Bald Eagles, more Sharp-shinned. It
was rather slow while I was there, so I focused on taking White-crowned,
White-throated and Lincoln's sparrow pictures. I also ended up finding
out the brand new 2Gb compact flash card for my camera is bad, and I
lost a good 50+ pictures including the Nelson's sharp-tailed pics I got
(that were probably pretty damned good). So a pretty good day ended on
a really sour note.
