Today I was excited to hear Lake Osakis opened up. All the wind broke up the
ice, so after school I headed over there. I was greeted by a lake full of
whitecaps, the wind was blowing very hard. But within the waves I found
several rafts of Red-breasted Mergansers. I also saw many flocks of
Bonapartes Gulls resting on the water, or flying around over the water. As I
was searching the Bonies for a different gull, I noticed a forked tail fly
by. I followed it with my binoculars and it turned out to be a Forster's
Tern. This is one of the earliest records for the north half of MN.
I also had 3 Lesser and 1 Greater Yellowlegs around the lake on various
ponds.
