Hi:

Well I just got back and thought I give everyone the results of the MOU =
Polk Co. Trip this past weekend.=20

14 particapants came along and boy did we see some great birds! =20

We saw 88 species of birds during the two days. I like to thank Jeanne =
Joppru and Ross Hier (DNR) for pointing me in the right direction for =
Gr. Prairie Chicken Leks and Sharp-tailed Grouse Leks. Jeanne showed us =
a NEW tremendous water impoundment that covered a area a mile long with =
mud flat and water deep enough to hold a ton of ducks and geese. This =
impoundment can all be seen from the comfort of a car.=20

Highlights:
-3 species of geese including some Gr. White Fronted Geese.
-Trumpeter Swan
-16 species of ducks
-7 species of raptors including several Rough-legged Hawks
-Gray Partridge (seen by a few)
-Sharp-tailed Grouse displaying 30 yards from us
-Gr. Prairie Chicken displaying next to the Sharp-tailed in the same =
field! All from 30 yards away! We also had a Gr. Prairie Chicken that =
flew on the side of this dirt road and displayed right in front of us!
5 species of shorebirds including Marbled Godwits and Bairds Sandpipers
4 species of gulls including a lot of fresh alternate plumage Franklin =
Gulls showing off thier pinkish breast.
** Long-eared Owl giving us long scope looks!
-Short-eared Owl flying over Pembina Prairie
-Black-billed Magpies
-8 species of sparrows including a very early LeConte's Sparrow giving =
us some decent looks and THOUSANDS of Lapland Longspurs most in breeding =
plumage. Never saw so many.

**Hundreds if not near thousands of Sandhill Cranes all over Polk and =
Pennington counties. We watch them dance and do there thing.

**I spotted a imm. Golden Eagle flying 30 feet over my head than landed =
in a field giving me awesome scope views. This was on Friday before the =
trip.

Mammals:
Jack Rabbits all over the place. A new mammal for many.

Other News:
After we birded Crookston sewage ponds we drove up Hwy 75 just NW of =
town and we saw all the police and media at the beginning of the road =
where they found the girl that has been missing for many months. The =
whole stretch of road was ribboned off.=20

This was one of the best weekend of birding I had in a long time! Lots =
of good stuff!
