This year my “breathless” bird has been the Red-headed Woodpecker that has
been making my week brighter. It has been here since Friday at my best
guess. Still here this AM, pecking away at the suet and scattering seeds
from my feeders. It’s a WOW bird for me, and I’m hoping against hope that it
may find a mate and nest, since I have no starlings in my immediate
vicinity. (I knocked wood after I wrote that…)

PS: If you want to see Red-headed Woodpeckers in the summer, one of the best
places in this area is Cedar Creek Natural History Area just E. of Hwy 65 on
Hwy 24. A place where they’ve been seen regularly there is a large wooded
area around E Bethel Blvd near Hwy 26 also. They are declining, but can be
seen in oak savanna areas.

For me it's the Scarlet Tanager (and, one year, its Summer cousin within the
