This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, December 2,
2005 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.
Ice is the rule here in northwestern Minnesota almost everywhere, as an
ice storm followed by cooling temperatures and snow whipped through the
area this week. All but the main highways are still very icy, and even
some of those remain very slippery. Great care is advised in driving ,
leaving little time for looking around.
A VARIED THRUSH in Wadena County at the home of Joe Clark between
Menahga and Sebeka was reported by Jim Lind. The bird has apparently
been present for the past week. If you wish to see the bird you can call
Joe at 218-837-6405 for directions.
Gretchen Mehmel reported in from Norris Camp in Lake of the Woods County
that they continue to see RUFFED GROUSE, BALD EAGLES, PILEATED
WOODPECKERS, PINE GROSBEAKS, EVENING GROSBEAKS, and other typical boreal
forest species.
>From the Roseau River WMA, Stan Wood reported a SNOWY OWL, and a BALD
EAGLE, and at Lost River State Forest two BALD EAGLES were sighted on
December 1. Another SNOWY OWL was seen by Randy Prachar at the Roseau
Lake WMA on December 1.
Pat Rice in Beltrami County saw 6 MALLARDS, and a COMMON GOLDENEYE on
November 29. On the 30th, she observed 4 BALD EAGLES and a ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK along Power Dam Road near Bemidji.
At Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge, Maggie Anderson reported that a
NORTHERN SHRIKE has been hanging around the headquarters this week. Gary
Tischer reported seeing four SHORT-EARED OWLS along CR 12 between 260th
and 280th streets NE. This is the same area where this species has been
reported most of the year.
Shelley Steva reported a COMMON RAVEN in Pennington County on November
26 near the intersection of CR 8 and MN 1. She saw many ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS that day along Pennington CR 8 and Polk CR 23 that day. On
December 1, an accipiter flew across my path on the east edge of Thief
River Falls as I drove to work . Due to road conditions, I was unable to
pay close enough attention to identify it further.
Mark Vettleson saw a SNOWY OWL along US 59 between Brooks and Erskine on
November 26. The location given would suggest either Red Lake or Polk
County for this bird. Red Lake County species seen by Shelley Steva were
LAPLAND LONGSPURS on November 29 and a flock of SNOW BUNTINGS seen each
day from November 29 to December 1 near the town of Oklee.
On November 25 Peder Svingen spotted a SHORT-EARED OWL hunting over CRP
on the south side of 260th St. SW west of 230th Ave SW which is the US
2 bypass east of Crookston . Nathaniel Emery reported GOLDEN-CROWNED
KINGLETS in the town of Crookston on November 30. Donna and Leon
Thoreson have seen two MOURNING DOVES, one CEDAR WAXWING, and one SNOW
BUNTING in their yard this week. On the 28th, three GOLDEN-CROWNED
KINGLETS were seen there.
Dennis Weisenborn, in Clay County on November 26, saw three
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, and a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL in some evergreens
3 miles east of Kragnes. He also found a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at North
Buffalo Church about 4 miles NE of Kragnes.
Roland Jordahl in Otter Tail County reported TRUMPETER SWAN, RUFFED
GROUSE, BALD EAGLE, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and AMERICAN TREE SPARROW.
On November 30, Susan Wiste saw two MOURNING DOVES in Douglas County 9
miles west of Alexandria.
Thanks to the many folks who sent in reports this week. Please keep
those sightings coming.
Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjoppru@wiktel.com OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
