On Wednesday morning Brad Beisel, Mike Hazard and I relocated one of the
previously reported Northern Hawk Owls on the south side of Stone Lake Rd.
in St. Louis County. It was about a half mile east of Co. Rd. 7. Earlier
we found a nice flock of about 30 Evening Grosbeaks along Co. Rd. 7 just
south of Co. Rd. 745.
Pine Grosbeaks and Rough-legged Hawks were common. Along Co. Rd. 8 between
Co. Rd. 7 and Co. Rd. 5 we caught a glimpse of 2 White-winged Crossbills.
This morning I found 2 Boreal Chickadees in Itasca County at a spot along
Co. Rd. 253(Alder Rd.) 3.1 miles north of Co. Rd. 48. There is a makeshift
trail that heads west from the road and the birds were a few hundred yards
in mixed with Black-capped Chickadees and Red-breasted Nuthatches. I found
a Boreal Chickadee at the same spot last year at this time. I also found 4
Redheads on Caribou Lake along Hwy 38, a late record for the northern part
of the state.
