This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, December 8th.
Jim Mattsson found an immature BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE on December 7th
at Black Dog Lake in Dakota County and it was still present today.
Initially, it was at the western outlet near I-35W and visible from
Black Dog Road but it has been seen at the eastern inlet as well.
Greg Pitella reported an immature Kittiwake at the Coon Rapids Dam in
Anoka County on the 4th which he then watched fly off to the south.
It seems plausible that these two reports represent the same bird.
Twelve more reports of SNOWY OWL have come in recently and I will
only summarize their occurrences here. Birds of various ages have
been seen at the following locations and some reports are secondhand:
In the parking lot of the new Highway Department building along the
truck bypass near state highway 1 near Thief River Falls in
Pennington County on November 30th.
Two and a half miles east of Correll, Big Stone County, on the south
side of state highway 7 on December 1st.
Near the ADC building in Shakopee, Scott County, on the 2nd.
Just east of the intersection of U.S. Highway 12 and Hennepin County,
Road 6 near Maple Plain on the 2nd.
On the corner of 26th Street and Harriet Avenue South in Minneapolis,
on December 2nd.
In the Sax-Zim Bog along St. Louis County 52 at the dead end road
just east of county road 208 on the 3rd.
In Goodhue County along U.S. Highway 52 near mile marker 85 on the 6th.
Two miles east of University of Minnesota Crookston campus on Polk
County Road 71, on the 6th.
Along Airport Approach Road in Duluth on the 6th. Airport Approach
Road can be reached by turning north off U.S. Highway 53 at Stebner
Road.
East of Thief River Falls, Pennington County, though no specific date
or location was given.
Along Marshall County Road 12 near county road 2 on December 8.
Northwest of Fertile, Polk County, near the Liberty WMA on December 8th.
On the 3rd, Jim Otto, Scott Meyer, and Doug Kieser visited the Sax-
Zim bog in St. Louis County and found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on Stone
Lake Road, a quarter of a mile east of County Road 7, and another on
Arkola Road a tenth of a mile west of Stickney Road. They also found
two GREAT GRAY OWLS on McDavitt Road, about three miles north of
County Road 28. Another Great Gray was reported by Tom Crumpton two
miles east of Clementson along Koochiching County Road 11. A Northern
Hawk Owl was seen on December 8th near the intersection of Marshall
County Road 7 and the Airport Road at Agassiz NWR.
Jim and Sharon Lind found a male HARLEQUIN DUCK at Lighthouse Point
in downtown Two Harbors, Lake County, on the 3rd. It was close to
shore along the gravel walking trail, east of the lighthouse. On the
5th, Jim Mattsson found a LONG-TAILED DUCK at Point Douglas,
Washington County.
A pair of CAROLINA WRENS is visiting the suet feeder at the home of
Jeff Burns along the 1500 block of west River Street in Monticello,
Wright County.
The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE is still being seen at Ann Lake, Sherburne
County. Take the campground access road off of Sherburne County Road
5 and drive about a mile to the small parking lot on the right, then
walk the southern snowmobile trail and scan the nearby trees.
Patrick Beauzay reports that the VARIED THRUSH is still being seen in
Redwood County. The bird can be found at 108 Cedar Point on the north
side of Redwood Falls. Follow state highway 19 into Redwood Falls.
Turn north onto Swain Street and drive to the Cedar Point/Crestview
Drive intersection on the left. Take Cedar Point to the third house
on the third on the right. Another Varied Thrush was reported by
Kelly Larson in Beltrami County on the 1st. It was on Movil Lake just
north of Bemidji off County Road 15. A male Varied Thrush briefly
visited the headquarters feeder at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge
in Marshall County on December 2nd. And a Varied Thrush was in the
yard of Steve Kingsbury in Oxford Township, Isanti County on the 7th.
And Tom Luanski had four EASTERN BLUEBIRDS at his feeder in Nininger
Township of Dakota County on December 4th.
The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, December 15th.
