I located an adult Northern Harrier along county road 7 just a mile =
north of Arkola Road. This is a sure sign that spring is arriving.
Other birds:
-Black-backed Woodpeckers were still in the traditional spot along =
McDavitt Rd. Bryan S. from Illinois found at least 5 Blk-backed =
Woodpeckers just a little north of the walking trail. My little group =
refound at least 3 of them.
-Boreal Chickadees were singing up a storm at the same location as the =
woodpeckers. We also saw some Gray Jays.
-The Sharp-tail Grouse were kicking up a storm on top of the snow doing =
their displaying at the Co. Rd. 29 lek. To get this spot drive Co. Rd =
133 west off Hwy 53 and drive west till you come to Co. Rd 229 and take =
a right here and head north. You will be on 229 for a 1/2 mile and the =
road changes to Co. Rd 29. Drive till you see a grey house on your right =
with a large demolished trailer home next to it. Go about a tenth of a =
mile north of the house and look east and the grouse are in the field on =
top of the now displaying. You'll need a scope to see all the ID marks =
of the grouse, but you can hear them from the road. the best times to be =
there is from 7am to 9am. We saw 6 grouse there this morning.
