Minnesota River Valley Audubon Chapter
Sherburne County Birding Day
(Location changed to Southern MN)
Field Trip Report
 
3 - Participants
51 - Species + Meadowlark - species unknown
 
Spent a nice day checking out the lakes and back roads of Dakota, Rice,  
Steele, Freeborn, Faribault, Waseca, Blue Earth and Le Sueur Counties.  We  
observed large numbers of Canada Geese and Cackling Geese in 3 of those  counties.  
Greater White-fronted Geese were also observed at Pihl's County  Park.  We 
also observed 16 species of Ducks, with Ring-necked Duck &  Lesser Scaup being 
observed in the greatest numbers.  Here are updates on  the lakes we checked out.
 
Rice County
Well's Lake - open lots of Geese, ducks and Heron's on nests in the  rookery
Lower Lake Sakatah - open East of CR 99 - good mix of waterfowl
 
Freeborn County
Geneva Lake - Frozen and snow covered
Freeborn Lake - Frozen and snow covered
Alden Lake(in down town Alden) - open, mix of ducks & one Cackling  Goose
 
Faribault County
Rice Lake - (7 miles West of Alden on I 90, then 1.5 miles South to Pihl's  
County Park entrance.  Lots of Cackling and Greater White-fronted Geese, +  
l00s of ducks.
Walnut Lake N - open 19 Bald Eagles and many Gulls and diving ducks few  
geese.
Walnut Lake S - Frozen
 
Blue Earth County 
Lura Lake - observed lake only from Daly Park on East side of the lake -  
Frozen and snow covered
Madison Lake - small open area on West side
 
Waseca County
Lake Elysian - From Hwy 60 - lake appeared completely frozen and snow  covered
 
Le Sueur County 
Lake Sakatah - West of Hwy 13 - Open -  mix of ducks and 1/2  dozen Cackling 
Geese - nice close looks
Lake Sakatah - East of Hwy 13 - just starting to open - no birds  present
 
Other species of interest to the group:
@ American Kestrel - observed approx. 20 in all but Le Sueur  counties.  
@ Eurasian Collared Doves - at previously posted location in the town of  
Farmington.
@ Horned Lark - observed 100's of pairs of Horned Larks and all seemed to  be 
paired up already and on territory.
@ Song Sparrow - one near Geneva Lake
@ Purple Finch - Pair North of Rice Lake
