After hanging near Lake Byllesby most of the day, I was rewarded with nice
looks at one Willet at the west end of the lake, by the sand bars. It was
observed from 5:00-5:45 p.m. It flew once, showing off that striking white and
black wing pattern. The dowitcher was in the same general area of the west
end. I studied long and hard. Due to a lack of heavy barring across the
front I'm putting it as a Short-billed Dowitcher. Also seen were a pair of
laggard Greater White-fronted Geese, a Caspian Tern, 3 Hudsonian Godwits (earlier
in the day, but they flew), Franklin's Gulls, Pectoral and Semipalmated
Sandpipers, lots of both Yellowlegs. A Purple Martin was among the swallows.
In the strange bedfellows category - two Bald Eagles standing with the
large group of American White Pelicans.
I tried birding Miesville Ravine, but it was quieter than quiet. The
best I could do was two Hermit Thrushes and a pair of Yellow-bellied
Sapsuckers. Not even one Yellow-rumped.

Good birding!
