Today was a good day in Waseca County. (Retirement--what a concept!) =
Among the 115 or so species were four additions to my county list:
- Western Tanager, male, at Senn-Rich WMA, 12:30 p.m., in the tall =
willows at the east (near) end of the wetland (NW of the entrance). =
After admiring the bird for a short time and noting its field marks, I =
returned to my car to get my recording equipment, hoping I could record =
its vocalization. When I returned, I could not find the bird, even =
after an extended search. Senn-Rich WMA is 4.5 miles south of Waseca on =
MN Hwy 13.
- Hooded Warbler, female, 9:00 a.m., Courthouse Park. I had good looks =
at it as it foraged very near the ground.
- American Bittern, heard at two locations in the afternoon. The first =
location was a crummy little cattail marsh in Otisco Township; the =
second was in the marsh on the west side of Buffalo Lake.
- Merlin, 5:00 p.m., Mott Lake. This bird, long overdue on my list, =
provided a thrill as it flew across the lake toward me from the south, =
then veered east to make a half-hearted pass at some blackbird types, =
then continued north and out of sight.
Other highlights:
- Five Sandhill Cranes; one pair engaged in (re)productive activity near =
the NW corner of Moonan Marsh, plus a threesome in flight in the same =
general area.
- An Osprey at Mott Lake that hovered a few times, then continued =
northward.
Lowlights: No Red-headed Woodpeckers or Swainson's Hawks. The former =
were common 20 years ago; the latter were easy to find. I last saw a =
Swainson's Hawk in Waseca County in July, 2003.
