This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, May 27, 2005
sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may
also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Slightly warmer temperatures have arrived , but with them have come many
rainy days which have made birding difficult. It has also pushed the
leaves to come out, so warbler watching is becoming difficult.

First an update on the interesting species found at Felton Prairie in
Clay County last week. As of Wednesday, May 25, both the ROCK WREN and
at least one of the SAY'S PHOEBES were still present in the gravel pit.

Herb Dingmann, Jeff Stephenson, and Ron Erpelding found a male CINNAMON
TEAL in Mahnomen County on May 26. The bird was seen in a small wetland
about a third mile west of CR 3 along CR 12 on the south side of the
road. Shelley Steva and I looked for the bird about 8:00 PM and were
unable to find it there, but time was limited, so we did not search
extensively.

Ben Fritchman reported finding LE CONTE'S SPARROW near Long Prairie in
Todd County on May 19.

In Douglas County, Susan Wiste had a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO in her yard
near Alexandria on May 21. On May 25, she reported a MERLIN along CR 11
three and a half miles north of CR 34 on the west side of Lake Carlos.
Beau Shroyer reported BOBOLINKS in the county.

Roland Jordahl reported many of the usual migrants in Otter Tail County
including SCARLET TANAGER in Maplewood State Park on May 26.

>From Hamden NWR in Becker County, Sherri Norland reported eight species
of shorebirds at Eagle Pond, and at the north end of the refuge there
was a MARBLED GODWIT, RUDDY TURNSTONE, and DUNLIN.

On May 24, Bob O'Connor reported a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD at Gooseberry
Park in Moorhead in Clay County. It was not relocated on May 25. On May
22, Jeff Bouton found MARBLED GODWIT, UPLAND SANDPIPER, and
CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS at Felton Prairie.=20
Ben Fritchman found a COMMON RAVEN there on May 25. Another species he
discovered in several places in the county was PHILADELPHIA VIREO. Doug
Johnson reported a CONNECTICUT WARBLER in south Moorhead on May 26 just
north of the footbridge over the Red River that goes into Lindenwood
Park in Fargo.

Lisa Zluticky in Waubun, Mahnomen County, reported COOPER'S HAWK on May
18, CAPE MAY WARBLER, and OVENBIRD in early May. =20

Among species reported by Russ and Pat Wilbur in Polk County on May 23
were BLUE-HEADED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, GRAY CATBIRD, YELLOW WARBLER,
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, and BLACKPOLL. Bruce Flaig reported INDIGO
BUNTING, LARK SPARROW, and BOBOLINK in the southern part of the county.
On the 20th, Nathaniel Emery found WESTERN GREBE, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER,
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, DUNLIN, CHIMNEY SWIFT,
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, MARSH WREN, and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT at the
Crookston wastewater treatment ponds, and on May 23, he found an
AMERICAN AVOCET, and RUDDY TURNSTONE.

Warblers are starting to show up in Pennington County this week, but we
have not seen large numbers of any one species, and no unusual ones. On
May 22, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER showed up in our yard, and on May 25,
the RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was here for suet and seeds. Five blue eggs
were found in our EASTERN BLUEBIRD house on Sunday.

>From Agassiz NWR in Marshall County, Maggie Anderson reported 12 EARED
GREBES on Headquarters Pool on May 20. That day Diana Morkassel observed
an OSPREY near Warren; Linda Johnson had a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD on
May 19, and an EASTERN BLUEBIRD on May 21.

Beltrami sightings reported by Pat Rice on May 20 included CHIMNEY
SWIFT, and EASTERN KINGBIRD. Pat DeWenter reported eight species of
warbler in Beltrami County on May 20 including GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER,
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, and OVENBIRD. Other species mentioned in her
report included LEAST FLYCATCHER, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, GRAY
CATBIRD, and SCARLET TANAGER.

>From Roseau County, Melanie Torkelson reported HORNED GREBE and LEAST
SANDPIPERS at the Roseau Lake WMA, and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, WILLET,
RUDDY TURNSTONE, DUNLIN, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, and FORSTER'S TERN at the
Roseau River WMA this week.

>From Lake of the Woods County this week, Gretchen Mehmel reported that
warblers are starting to move through and into the area. She also
reported HERMIT THRUSH and WINTER WREN. Martin Kehoe reported
CONNECTICUT WARBLERS 1.5 miles east of the Bankton Road along the Rapid
River Forest Road. GREAT GRAY OWLS have been seen by Gretchen Mehmel
along the Roosevelt Road south of Bednar Road, and by Martin Kehoe 2.4
miles south of the Bankton Road on the Pitt Grade, and 3.6 miles north
of the Stoney Corners Road on the Pitt Grade.

Thanks to the many folks who sent in reports this week.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjoppru@wiktel.com OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
