I just returned from 2 days of birding around the MN River Valley in =
preparation for the 6th Annual
Great MN River Birding Day on September 17th. I was surprised to find a =
family of 5 Common=20
Moorhens in one of the potholes along the wildlife drive at the Morris =
Wetland Management District=20
located about 2.6 miles east of US 59 on the south side of Co. Rd. 10 in =
Stevens County. My wife=20
and I had great views of one adult and 4 immature moorhens from a spot =
on the drive near a stone=20
with a dedication plaque on it. It is about half way along the drive =
and you look down on the pothole=20
towards the south. =20
The only good shorebird spot that I found was at the SE corner of MN 104 =
and Co. Rd. 9 in the NW=20
corner of Kandiyohi County. There were 3 American Golden Plovers, a =
Semiplamated Plover, Pectoral=20
Sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs and Wilson's Snipe there this morning and =
a quick look on the way
home reveiled a slightly different mix of shorebirds. =20
Other highlights included challenging flocks of migrants at 7 Mile Creek =
in Nicollet County yesterday=20
morning, at Mt. Tom in Sibley State Park, Kandiyohi County last evening, =
 along the back roads of=20
SE Pope County this morning, and along the nature trail at Froland WPA =
and in 2 different locations=20
in Glacial Lakes State Park in Pope County this afternoon.=20
Anyone interested in participating in the birding day this year should =
contact me by e-mail at bxwilliams@cbburnet.com or by phone at =
612-728-2232
Everyone is welcome whether you want to bird locally or outstate, for 1 =
hour or all day. We are trying=20
to get as many birders as we can into the field on September 17th so =
that we can meet or beat last=20
year's record of 186 species throughout the valley. There are also =
rallies in 3 locations for you to=20
attend whether or not you can bird that day. The rally in Shakopee at =
Memorial Park starting at 1PM=20
will be lead by Sharon Stiteler. The rally in Mankato at Rasmussen =
Woods starting at 2PM will be=20
lead by Al Batt. The rally in Watson at the Historic Watson Town Hall =
starting at 4PM will be lead=20
by Steve Hettig. It is a great way to celebrate the beauty and the =
importance of the MN River Valley=20
for the birds and it is all free. The website for the MN River Valley =
Birding Trail at=20
www.birdingtrail.org has more info about the birding day.
