This gull is not going to be caught anytime soon and should not be. We =
observed it flyng around, catching grasshoppers, etc. Yes, it has a =
problem as it does not appear to be able to use its legs but it is =
getting some food and while weak is quite able to fly. As a boat was =
coming into the access and would flush the bird anyway I walked up to =
the bird slowly. I was only able to get about 12-15 feet from the bird =
before it flew around the area.
It has been in the access area, around the Lake Rebecca area to the west =
of the access, and flying over the river in various areas.
In all likelyhood the bird will die sometime soon but a rehab clinic =
will not be able to do anything for legs that simply do not work. The =
legs did not appear to be tangled with anything that we were able to see =
as it flew by quite close a few times while catching the insects. To =
capture the bird would be similar to taking a terminally ill cancer =
patient through unnecessary chemo when it will do no good. Let the bird =
enjoy the freedom it has always known in its time. =20
And hope that it finds enough food that the legs start to work. Its has =
come a long ways from its nesting grounds already and should be given =
the chance to continue.
