This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, August 18,
2006 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Rain has started to fall in northwest Minnesota this week, but amounts
vary greatly, and all has disappeared into the thirsty ground very
quickly. Southward migration has definitely begun, as there have been
reports of northern warblers, and of course shorebird return migration
has been underway for a couple of weeks.

Beth Siverhus reported a NORTHERN HAWK OWL sighted on August 10
three-quarters of a mile south of Itasca CR 32 along CR 156. Also in
Itasca County, she reported an immature RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at Dixon
Lake.

Pat DeWenter reported a small warbler wave in Beltrami County on August
15. They included GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER,
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER,
and AMERICAN REDSTART. Other species seen from her Bemidji yard included
BLACK TERN, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, and PILEATED WOODPECKER.

A shorebird survey last weekend at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County
tallied over 2500 individuals with a good diversity of species, although
nothing really unusual was seen. A few GREAT EGRETS can be found in
several places on the refuge including Headquarters Pool along CR 7.

Shelley Steva spotted an OSPREY flying over Thief River Falls on August
15.

In Becker County, Pat Beauzay saw a PRAIRIE FALCON at Hamden Slough NWR
on August 17. The bird was perched in a dead tree overlooking Hesby
Wetland.

In Otter Tail County, Dan and Sandy Thimgan did see two COMMON MOORHEN
chicks on August 15, but found the adults very elusive. That location is
along the portion of CR 67 and CR 8 where they run together a few miles
north of New York Mills. There are lots of cattails to hide in, and the
birds take full advantage of that fact.

Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Pat DeWenter, Shelley Steva, Pat Beauzay, and
Dan and Sandy Thimgan for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjoppru@wiktel.com OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. When reporting by email please put "NW Bird Report" in the
subject line of your message. The next scheduled update of this report
is Friday, August 25, 2006.
