This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, August 25,
2006 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

The fall season is nearing, and the drought condition that has existed
in the area all summer is hastening the transition. A few trees are even
showing a little yellow in the leaves. Recent rain has revived a few
temporary wetlands, but many of them were dry too long to attract
shorebirds now. Migration is underway again, warblers are being
reported, and of course shorebirds are already working their way south.

Pat Rice , while birding in Clearwater County on August 21, visited the
Bagley wastewater treatment ponds where she found ten species of
shorebirds, and others including MERLIN, BLACK TERN, GRAY CATBIRD, and
CEDAR WAXWING. Shorebirds seen there were SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, KILLDEER,
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPER,SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER, and
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER.

On August 19, at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall County,
large numbers of SANDHILL CRANES were congregating in the northwest part
of the refuge. The weekly shorebird survey found a decreased number of
shorebirds, but the diversity was still good with 14 species being seen.
One RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was found. Best places to see shorebirds were
South Pool along CR 7, and Madsen Pool in the interior of the refuge.
Several AMERICAN BITTERNS were seen that day at the refuge.

Thanks to Pat Rice for her report.
