This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, February 9th.
In Beltrami County, NORTHERN HAWK OWLS were seen on February 4th
along state highway 72 north of the town of Waskish. Several Northern
Hawk Owls were in Lake of the Woods County on the 4th. One was along
county road 1 one mile west of state highway 72, another was at the
north end of county road 77, a third was at the junction of county
road 77 and 72, and one was along state highway 72 south of county
road 77 near the Beltrami County line. In Aitkin County, Warren
Nelson reports two Northern Hawk Owls on the 4th, the first one near
Palisade on county road 5, about one half mile south of highway 232.
The second owl was half a mile south of the junction of county road
56 and 350th Avenue. In the Sax-Zim Bog, a Northern Hawk Owl seen on
the 5th along St. Louis county Road 133, three quarters of a mile
west of county road 5.
Three SNOWY OWLS can be seen in Aitkin County. One is north of Aitkin
along county road 1, about one and a half miles north of the
diversion ditch bridge. The second is along township road 380 about
two miles west of county road 5. The third was about a mile north of
the junction of 450th Street and 310th Avenue. A Snowy Owl was seen
in Koochiching County on February 4th along county road 36 less than
a mile west of state highway 71. Chris Benson re-found the Snowy Owl
reported earlier on Goodhue County Road 1, a quarter of a mile south
of county road 9. He also saw another Snowy Owl on state highway 57,
one mile south of U.S. Highway 52. Linda Sparling found a Snowy Owl
just north of Meadowlands on St. Louis County Road 29.
On the 5th, an adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was at the unusual
location of the Duluth Central High School parking lot.
