Birding with a couple from Florida:

-Northern Hawk Owl: 1 mile east of Highway 73 on the Lind Road. The =
owl was calling and heard it give its long song as if a female was =
nearby. We explored this stretch of highway and the bog is unbelievable =
beautiful! I am very excited about this area along Highway 73 from St. =
Louis Co Rd 22 to the south up to St. Louis Co. Rd 500 or to Highway 1. =
There are many side roads that look really exciting for some bog birds.

-Winter Finches: Pine Grosbeaks, Common Redpolls, Evening Grosbeaks, and =
Pine Siskins were seen at several places in Sax Zim Bog.

-Boreal Chickadees The best spot in the Sax Zim Bog is along McDavitt =
Rd. 2.5 miles north of St. Louis County Rd 28 or the Sax Road. Walk =
along the new logging road on the east side and look for the large tree =
root up ended from the bulldozer. Behind the ball of roots is a deer =
carcass and Black-capped and Boreal Chickadees were feeding a feet from =
us on the carcass.

-Black-backed Woodpecker were heard calling and drumming but not seen =
along the same logging road mentioned above.

-Black-billed Magpies were seen along the Sax Road a mile east of Co. Rd =
7.

-Northern Goshawks were seen in two places. The first adult was seen =
perched along owl avenue and Overton Road. I seen this bird here at =
least 3 times! Another adult was seen flying over Hwy 1 and US Hwy. 53

-Snow Buntings ( 300-400) were seen feeding on a cattle pasture on the =
east side of Co. Rd 29 and Dart Road.

-Ruffed Grouse was seen perched up high on a tamarack tree along =
Stickney Road a mile north of Co. Rd 52 (Arkola Rd.)

* Tomorrow I will report from Lake Co and the Two Harbors.
