This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, February 24,
2006 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You

It has been winter this week, in sharp contrast to the mild weather we
have enjoyed all season. However the temperatures are slowing warming, a
few inches of fresh snow , and the arrival of Horned Larks throughout
much of the area are lifting the spirits. Spring is on the way.
Two Grand Forks birders, Betsy Batstone-Cunningham and Ben Bartos, were
birding in Roseau County on February 19, where they found a ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK, six NORTHERN HAWK OWLS, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE. There were
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS along MN 310 around milepost 8 or 9. Gary
Tischer saw a SNOWY OWL five miles south of Roseau along MN 89 on
February 18.
In Kittson County, Betsy Batstone-Cunningham and Ben Bartos saw
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE and SNOW BUNTINGS on the weekend. Larry Wilebski
reported a SNOWY OWL four miles west of Lancaster on February 18. He
also has 7 WILD TURKEYS, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, and both BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS
and CEDAR WAXWINGS on his property near Lancaster.
>From Marshall County on February 19, Dana Jenkins reported a BALD EAGLE
with food, ten miles north of Thief River Falls along US 59. Deanna and
Marty Peterson observed SHARP-TAILED GROUSE along CR 12 on February 18.
Gary Tischer found a SNOWY OWL, one of two which have been reported
before, two miles south of the junction of MN 89 and MN 219 north of
Goodridge on the 18th.
In Pennington County on February 18, Marty Peterson saw GRAY PARTRIDGE
along CR 10 between MN 1 and CR 8. Lisa Newton reported 15 SHARP-TAILED
GROUSE along MN 1 a quarter mile east of CR 22 on February 22. A pair of
HORNED LARKS were seen a quarter mile west of CR 22, and many SNOW
BUNTINGS were also in the area.
Pat Fischer, in Red Lake County on February 23, saw a BALD EAGLE soaring
over the town of Red Lake Falls.
Eve Freeberg saw a SNOWY OWL along US 2 in Polk County on February 18,
2.5 miles west of UMC Crookston. Dan Svedarsky saw a gray phase
GYRFALCON on the east side of Mentor along Highway 2 on February 15. An
immature GOSHAWK was seen east of Crookston. The location was 7 miles
east on US 2, then 2 miles south on CR 46, and 3/4 mile east on the
township road to the Booming Flats sign. Donna and Leon Thoreson
reported a RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD in Climax, and a BALD EAGLE near the
Climax golf course. Fifty to sixty SNOW BUNTINGS and 30 AMERICAN
GOLDFINCHES are visiting their feeders. The BALD EAGLES are back at the
nest near East Grand Forks. Bruce Flaig reported a RUFFED GROUSE,
HORNED LARKS, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and SNOW BUNTINGS in southern Polk County
on February 19.
>From Hubbard County, Ben Fritchman reported SNOW BUNTINGS; and PINE
GROSBEAKS were seen at a feeder at the southwest corner of the
intersection of CR 33 and MN 64 south of Akeley on February 17.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE, and SNOW BUNTINGS were also seen in Becker County by
Ben Fritchman.
Connie Norheim and Becky Oberlander, while birding in Clay County on
February 16, observed two BALD EAGLES at the Moorhead Science Center.
Other species seen in the county included a NORTHERN FLICKER, PILEATED
WOODPECKER, HORNED LARKS, and 200 SNOW BUNTINGS. In Wilkin County they
saw an AMERICAN KESTREL along CR 52. A SNOWY OWL was found less than a
quarter mile south of CR 52 along CR 15. Also along CR 15, they found
two GRAY PARTRIDGE , and one GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN.
>From Otter Tail County on February 22, Teresa Jaskiewicz reported 12
TRUMPETER SWANS on the Otter Tail River; elsewhere in the county she
