I have been birding Martin and Faribault Counties and just returned =
home. On Sunday I saw a very large male grackle, much larger than a =
Common Grackle, by Pierce Lake in Martin Co. I was not able to =
distinguish which Quisalas species it was before it flew off.
I returned on Monday about 11:30, and was able to refind the bird. =
Luckily it perched on a post next to a Common Grackle at an adjoining =
post so I was able to compare size. After some study it flew to a =
plowed field across the road for further views.
I believe it was a Great-tailed Grackle for the following reasons: =
relatively flat head and long bill, blue iridescence on the back which I =
could see well against the dark field, and the extremely long tail.=20
The bird is located at the extreme south end of Pierce Lake which is =
southwest of Fairmont. Going north on Green Road from CR 118, look for =
the sharp turn heading directly east, then watch for two tall fence =
posts just a short distance from this turn. The bird perches on those =
posts and flies into the plowed field across from it.=20
Also in the vicinity was a calling Sora, good looks at an American =
Bittern, and Bobolink.
