This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, August 2nd, 2007
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Unusually high numbers of migrating BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS are being
reported across the state, and the Duluth area is no exception. Dave and
Sarah Grosshuesch reported two on the 27th at the Park Point
recreational area soccer fields. Three were found the next day, and the
number has grown throughout the past week to at least 11 on the 2nd.
They have also been seen on the shore of the harbor near the boat
launch. Peder Svingen found four BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS on the 30th at
Hearding Island, and four on the 31st at the 40th Avenue West Erie Pier
area.
Songbird migration is also underway, with migrant TENNESEE WARBLERS and
WILSON'S WARBLER banded by Dave Grosshuesch on the 1st and 2nd at Hawk
Ridge in Duluth. Dave also banded a MARSH WREN on the 2nd, and saw
flocks of RED CROSSBILLS and EVENING GROSBEAKS on both days.
The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, August
9th. The telephone number of the Duluth Rare Bird Alert is 218-834-2858.
Information about bird sightings may be left following the recorded
message.
