This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 2nd 2007.
Lac Qui Parle County seems to have been the place to be during the past
week.
On August 1st and 2nd, a NEOTROPIC CORMORANT was reported at the Bolson
Slough rookery at the junction of county roads 12 and 9 in southwestern
Lac Qui Parle County.
A RUFF was at the Ruby Red Peninsula of the Big Stone NWR in Lac Qui
Parle County on the 28th. To reach the access road, drive south from the
Big Stone NWR headquarters on Big Stone County Road 19. After crossing
the river and the road becomes Lac Qui Parle County Road 15, look for
the second gated road on the left. This is the access road. Walk down
the gravel access road to the fork. Take the right fork to the tip of
the peninsula.
On August 2nd, a LARK BUNTING was on a gravel road in Augusta Township,
Lac Qui Parle County. From Marietta go one mile east on state highway
40, then three-quarters of a mile north on 131st Avenue.
In Jackson County, a BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen on the 28th at the north
end of Big Spirit Lake on the Minnesota / Iowa border. This is at the
grade along Jackson County Road 2.
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS are being reported across the state. Two places
with high numbers are the Jirik sod farms -- which had more than 70
Buff-breasteds this past week -- in Empire Township at the junction of
Blaine Avenue and Dakota County Toad 66; and Lac Qui Parle County, which
had 53 Buff-breasted Sandpipers on July 28th along 366th Street, just
east of 141st Avenue.
The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, August 9th 2007.
