This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 30,
2007 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Cool nights have come to the northwest, reminding us that the summer is
ending. Migration is continuing with more and more migrants showing up.
Warblers and shorebirds are the most common migrants being seen now.
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES are being reported in almost all counties at
this time.

The adult LONG-TAILED JAEGER that was seen by Scott Swanson in Marshall
County on August 21 was relocated by him on August 28 in the same
location where he video-taped it on August 21 and about the same time of
day. The bird was present from at least 11:15 until about 7:15P.M.
Thursday, August 30, and seen by several observers during that time.
Location is north on Pennington CR 20 ( becomes Marshall CR 12) , turn
east on the road marked Farmes Pool. About a mile east the road curves
sharply to the left - at that point look or turn right and the bird is
being seen on the gravel road about 100-200 feet from the corner.

A TURKEY VULTURE was seen in Clay County by Ron Erpelding and Herb
Dingmann on August 25.

In Norman County, Ron and Herb reported a TRUMPETER SWAN and several
RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the Twin Valley wastewater treatment ponds, and
a WOOD THRUSH at the county park near Twin Valley.

Ron's and Herb's Polk County sightings on the weekend included a
BROAD-WINGED HAWK and a MERLIN at the Wetlands, Pines, and Prairies
Audubon Sanctuary, ten species of shorebirds at Erskine wastewater
treatment ponds, migrating COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, and a LARK SPARROW at the
SNA across from the University in Crookston. Also on August 25, Peder
Svingen found a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER at the Erskine wastewater
treatment ponds.

12 species of warblers were seen in Red Lake County on the weekend;
other species seen included COMMON NIGHTHAWK and LARK SPARROW.

Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann saw BONAPARTE'S GULL, GREAT HORNED OWL,
and 10 species of warbler in Pennington County on the weekend. Peder
Svingen counted 214 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, the second highest count for
the state, at the Thief River Falls wastewater treatment ponds on August
24. He also found an AMERICAN PIPIT for the earliest fall record for
Minnesota.

In Marshall County, besides the jaeger, Tamarac Pool at Agassiz NWR
continues to attract many migrating shorebirds, and some shorebirds are
showing up at Headquarters and South Pools along CR 7. Last week's
survey included more than 2500 shorebirds of 20 species including 10
HUDSONIAN GODWITS at Madsen Pool and 7 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS at
Tamarac Pool. Hundreds of SANDHILL CRANES are gathering in newly
harvested wheat fields along the west boundary of the refuge.

Larry Wilebski reported migrating warblers in Kittson County and also a
GREEN HERON near Lancaster.

>From Roseau County, Beth Siverhus observed a GREAT EGRET on August 27.

Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Larry Wilebski, Peder Svingen, Ron Erpelding,
Herb Dingmann, and Scott Swanson for their reports.
