The MNDNR recently announced proposed revisions to the state's protected =
species list, including the designation of the boreal owl (Aegolius =
funereus) as a threatened species ("the species is likely to become =
endangered within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant =
portion of its range within Minnesota"; MNDNR Nongame Wildlife Program =
website). After 20 years monitoring the species during its springtime =
breeding season, I believe the listing is wholly justified. Why? The =
owl is an obligate cavity nester reliant upon old, cavity-prone trees =
and it demonstrates diverse circadian habitat requirements. More =
importantly, however, are the data that strongly suggests the species is =
in decline in northeastern Minnesota. =20

=20

Rather than keep my survey data hidden in obscurity, I have posted =
summary data on my website. In part, the Nongame Program will be using =
these data for a final determination on the species' protected status. =
I invite all to look at nearly 20 years of survey data and make your own =
conclusions about the direction the boreal owl population in northeast =
Minnesota is headed.=20
