We went down to Dakota County today in search of the Gyr and I'm not sure if
we found it or not! This falcon was sitting on a power pole on 170th just
off 52. We were only seeing the back of the bird and with the bright sun,
it looked very dark. It had a very distinct mustache so we wondered if
perhaps it was a Peregrine. It flew out into the corn field and was eating
something -- there were no ducks or geese anywhere in the area. When we got
home I looked again at Peter's wonderful movie of the Gyr from last weekend
and now I believe that we were seeing the same bird on the same pole! I've
posted a couple photos on Yahoo photo -- I have cropped and lightened both
up quite a bit. If you opt for the slideshow, you will see a bigger than
thumbnail version of the photo. This is the link:

Could those of you familiar with this bird take a look and confirm if it is
the Gyr?
On 180th we saw 3 Chukars -- they are beautiful. Does anyone know where
they came from? Do people consider this a "countable" bird? Is there a
game farm in that area?
We didn't see the Varied Thrush in St. Paul but it was a good bird day
nonetheless!
Thanks for any and all input!
Gail
