This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, February 23,

The weather has changed dramatically this week. With temperatures
warming up, we have experienced the first rain since last fall;
unfortunately it was of the freezing kind, and fortunately it didn't
last long and we are cold again. The birds seem confident that spring is
on the way. Chickadees are singing their spring songs, woodpeckers are
drumming and chasing each other around the trees, and goldfinches are
starting to turn back into the jewels they are all summer.

On February 16, Ben Fritchman found a SNOWY OWL in Wilkin County along
I-94 0.3 mile west of the Hwy 108 exit not far from the Rothsay WMA.

Jeff and Amy Drake reported a BARRED OWL in Otter Tail County 14.2 miles
west of Richville on February 15. On the 16th, they saw two AMERICAN
TREE SPARROWS, 10 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, a pair of NORTHERN CARDINALS, and 30
COMMON REDPOLLS at Richville. On February 17, Alma Ronningen saw two
HORNED LARKS near Star Lake. From the Orwell Reservoir and State Game
Management area Terry Brokke reported MALLARD, COMMON GOLDENEYE,
AMERICAN ROBIN, and SNOW BUNTINGS. Teresa Jaskiewicz observed a probable
NORTHERN GOSHAWK north of Elizabeth on February 15.

Shelley Steva saw a WILD TURKEY in Clay County on February 15.

An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen by Jeff and Amy Drake along CR 78 in Becker
County on February 15.

Three COMMON REDPOLLS were seen by Shelley Steva in Norman County on
February 15. SNOW BUNTINGS were seen in large flocks in all counties
from Clay County to Red Lake County on that day.

On February 14, Shelley Steva observed SHARP-TAILED GROUSE in Red Lake
County.

A group of sharp-eyed birders from southern Minnesota on the weekend
found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL at mile marker 49 along MN 72, two
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, and a BOREAL CHICKADEE at mile marker 25 on
February 17, all in Beltrami County. On the 18th, they found
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE and PINE GROSBEAKS. A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was
spotted deep in the Beltrami Island State Forest by one of the group. On
February 19, a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was seen north of mile marker 31
along MN 72. Kelly Larson found a NORTHERN SHRIKE along MN 71 5 miles
north of Blackduck.

In Lake of the Woods County, the southern Minnesota group found 6
SHORT-EARED OWLS along CR 1 on the portion running due west of MN 72 on
February 17. On February 18, they saw a VARIED THRUSH and a FOX SPARROW
northwest of Baudette near the Rainy River; two SNOWY OWLS were seen -
one along CR 16 just west of MN 72, and one at mile marker 62 on MN 72.
Also seen were SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, PINE GROSBEAKS, and several HOARY
REDPOLLS. Kelly Larson reported a GRAY JAY, and NORTHERN SHRIKE on the
Pitt Grade Forest Road, and a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE on the Bankton Trail.
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen on the Pitt Grade.

In Roseau County, a VARIED THRUSH, AMERICAN ROBIN, and WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS were seen in Warroad near St. Mary's Church in the northern
part of Warroad on February 18.

Lyle and Sally Lauber at Dixon Lake in western Itasca County reported a
flock of COMMON REDPOLLS that included one HOARY REDPOLL at their
feeder.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County found a SNOWY OWL between Orleans and
Humboldt, and another northwest of Lancaster on February 16. The next
day, he saw another SNOWY OWL 3 miles north of Lancaster along US 59. On
February 17, he reported four SHORT-EARED OWLS , 4 GRAY JAYS, and 3
HOARY REDPOLLS at his property a few miles northwest of Lancaster.Six
SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen near his cabin on February 19. 15
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were seen dancing on February 18 in Kittson County.
