5:20 pm the owl is sitting in the wood duck box at the northwest corner =
of our house. You may park in the street and see the box from your car.
We heard lots of calling this fall but never saw it. We installed a =
small infrared light equipped video camera earlier this fall. The box =
was empty until today. I used the camera yesterday and no one was home. =
The storm must have pushed it into the box. There appeared to be one =
pellet in the box today.
An E. Screech owl, red phase was in the box these last two winters from =
mid Dec. to mid Feb. I think the very mild winter kept it outside the =
box. I can't tell from the black and white image if this is the red =
phase owl again. I think so. When it came to the hole we could just =
barely see it in binoculars. It seemed too dark to be a gray phase, but =
I am sure we will get a better look soon.
The Night Owl camera www.birdhousespycam.com is inexpensive ($85) and =
easy to set up and use. I don't have high speed service, so don't expect =
a live video feed, but I can run a signal to the VCR and grab a few =
frames.
