Hi everyone,
Chris Hockema and I traveled north today, first, for a crack at the rosy
finches. No luck, but we found out they were seen before and after we were
there. Typical Bartkey luck again. However, we did much better on the
previously much-posted Aitken County gem, Hedbom Road! We came in from the
St. Louis County end and about a mile west of where it changed to Aitken
County, we found a female black-backed woodpecker on the north side of the
road. Another couple who were up birding from Iowa, Al and Karen, were able
to see this bird too. Shortly after that, we heard someone yelling in the
woods from the south side of the road, and the voice said, "Three-toed!" We
went to investigate and there we found Kim and Cindy Risen! Kim was taking
photos of a nice male three-toed woodpecker. Al and Karen also joined in on
this one, and it was a lifer for them, which is always very cool! Then,
about another 100 yards west of there, Chris and I found a male black-backed
on the north side. In all three cases, the woodpeckers fed quite extensively
on the lower part of the tree trunks, sometimes mere inches from the ground.
So needless to say, we had very good, long looks.
A couple miles west of there, Chris and I had a great gray owl fly out of
the trees from the north and turn around, then fly back in. It didn't perch
nearby from what we could tell.
Other highlights were a few red crossbill flyovers, a single pine grosbeak
on the west end, and a flock of pine siskins on the St. Louis County end.
We had much more planned, but we could only do a day trip. WE NEEDED MORE
DAYLIGHT! But how do you pull yourself away from woodpeckers like that?
Good birding!
