This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday January 11th 2007.
John Hockema reported a 1st-winter BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE on the 11th
from Lake City, Wabasha County. The bird was on the ice behind the Wild
Wings Art Gallery at the Lake City Sportsman's Club on the south side of
town. On the 8th, Bill Unzen reported another Kittiwake at the north end
of Lac Qui Parle Lake in Lac Qui Parle and Swift counties. The bird was
seen from highway 119.
On January 11th, the GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was still visiting the feeder
in the town of Mountain Lake, Cottonwood County. In the town of Mountain
Lake, take the first exit from State Highway 60 onto 3rd Avenue and
drive to 10th Street. Turn north on 10th street and drive to the edge of
town to a cemetery and lake on the left. The feeder is in front of the
pale green house, which is the second to the last building on the right
side of the road.
The three GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES at the Fond du Lac Resource
Management Division office just west of Cloquet in St. Louis County were
all seen as recently as the 11th.
An adult gray-morph GYRFALCON was found by Dave Evans on January 4th in
the vicinity of the I-535 Blatnik Bridge in the Duluth harbor. Dave also
found a SNOWY OWL on the 5th in the Duluth harbor along Garfield Avenue
just east of the Goodwill store.
The SNOWY OWL northeast of the town of Plainview in Wabasha County was
seen again on the 7th, along the gravel road that goes north of State
Highway 42 between mile markers 21 and 22. On January 8th, Michael Cary
found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL north of Duluth on the east side of St. Louis
County Road 4 about a quarter of a mile north of the junction with
Martin Road. Two GREAT GRAY OWLS were along the Hedbom Road in
northeastern Aitkin County. On the 7th, one was six-and-half miles west
of the eastern yellow gate, and the other was about two and a quarter
miles west of this gate.
Unusual was the ROSS'S GOOSE found by Brian Smith on Fish Lake in
Cottonwood County on the 1st.
A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE is being seen intermittently at Afton State Park
in Washington County. On the 11th, it was south of the line of conifers
and east of the trail that runs through the Backpacking Campground.
