The Green-tailed Towhee survived the below zero temperatures last night. It
was at least 17 degrees below zero in Mountain Lake this morning. On my
drive over there the temps ranged from 9 below around Byron to 22 below
around Owatonna. It was 17 below when I arrived at the Mountain Lake
location at 8AM. The towhee finally showed up below the feeders at 10:20AM
but didn't stick around very long - probably less than a minute. It perched
in the nearby bush, hopped over to below the feeder and grabbed a couple
bites and then flew off behind the blind.
The Horned Larks and Lapland Longspurs were very abundant in Cottonwood and
Watonwan counties. It seemed like I would run into a large flock every mile
or so when I would take the gravel roads. There were also a few Snow
Buntings that I was able to pick out in a couple of the flocks.
