Sorry for the delayed posting as I didn't have access to a computer before
now. I was in Souix Falls this weekend, and while I was driving home on
Saturday 1/20/07 afternoon, I observed a Prairie Falcon 6-8 miles west of
Luverne MN near the beaver creek exit on interstate I-90. The bird was
observed in an aerial display directly over the freeway at a low altitude
hunting smaller birds as we drove past. I immediately recognized it as a
falcon by its shape, pointed wings, narrow tail. It was a light colored,
medium-large sized falcon noticeably more slender than a peregrine but not
bigger that gave it the appearance of having long slender wings and a long
tail. As I wasn't driving, I was able to study it for perhaps 20 seconds
before we drove past it and out of sight behind us. I marked the spot on my
GPS, but don't have the coordinates handy at the moment, email me if you
would like them.
