Personally I would rather see banders leave this gyr alone. I would =
think by now with all information on the internet and also known papers =
written about Gyrs we should by now know where gyrs breed. Why is it so =
important to know where it came from? The most important part of all =
this reports about the Hastings Gyr is that its close to the cities =
where birders from all over can witness it chase waterfowl or just soar =
over birders head. IF this Gyr ever gets netted/banded in the Hastings =
area then the only way birders will ever find out about where it breeds =
at is IF by chance there is a researcher who happens to retrap this same =
Gyr near its nest in its breeding ground!
I guess I just don't understand why there is always a need to slap a =
band on a unusual raptor like a Gyr. I can understand this desire to =
band a bird like a Gyr if there is a on going project that pertains to =
Gyr winter movements but to just say " hey lets slap a band on it so we =
can see where it breeds or if its the same bird that's been coming here =
for four years" I mean why not slap a band on every casual/accidental =
bird that is found in Minnesota!!
Let the Gyr alone and let birders/photographers and the rest of the =
public enjoy the Gyr flying around bandless, knocking mallards out of =
the sky and ect.. Hey if the Gyr does get banded why not snap a green =
wing tag on it and spray the head black because this is how our Duluth =
Snowy Owl looks like at the present!!

I agree with Mark Martell that the falconer was more than likely =
unaware of the gyr. I have met a falconer, I can't think of his name =
who is really into kites and flies them any chance he gets. I've met =
him in Duluth. I've emailed a couple of falconry friends to find out of =
it's him.
As for banding they gyr, I personally would like to see it banded. I =
would be interested to see if this is in fact the same bird that has =
shown up for the last four years and a chance to learn where its =
breeding ground is. Look at the cool information we learned about the =
green-tailed towhee.

I have no explanation for the kite other than some people use kites =
with food attached to train their bird to gain altitude.
I am guessing this falconer was unaware of the gyr.
