This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, March 2, 2007
sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may
also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Mother nature has asserted her control again, giving us our winter
supply of snow in a few days of late February and early March.
Everything is white now, and more to come. It will be interesting to see
how this will affect the many birds that usually go south, but which
have remained with us this year. In addition we are receiving early
reports of some migrants from the southern part of the area.

In Lake of the Woods County, Pat Rice relocated a SNOWY OWL along CR 16
on February 22.

Beth Siverhus in Roseau County had a GRAY JAY in the yard on February
26, and an AMERICAN ROBIN was also seen, both in the town of Warroad. A
COMMON REDPOLL was seen on February 28.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS, and the
season's first HORNED LARKS at his place northwest of Lancaster on
February 23. On the 25th, some visitors reported RUFFED GROUSE,
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, HOARY REDPOLL and several other winter species
there.

Connie Cox, park naturalist at Itasca State Park, reported a VARIED
THRUSH at her feeder six miles north of Itasca State Park in Clearwater
County on February 19. The bird comes sporadically. Connie can be
reached at 218-266-2110. Please call before you go.

>From Beltrami County, Pat Rice reported a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER at mile
marker 31 of MN 72 on February 22. Other species seen that day included
six SHARP- TAILED GROUSE, two BALD EAGLES, SNOW BUNTINGS along MN 72,
and PINE GROSBEAKS at Waskish. A total of 12 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS was seen
in Beltrami and Lake of the Woods Counties.

In Pennington County, Shelley Steva saw a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK in Thief
River Falls near the turkey plant on February 28. Five species of
woodpeckers are coming to the suet in our yard near Thief River Falls -
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, DOWNY WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, NORTHERN
FLICKER, and a pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS. A GRAY JAY also came by on
February 23.

Gloria Nord in Otter Tail County reported that the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE
that was seen in late December still comes periodically, most recently
on February 27. The location is section 2 of Dora Township. A LONG-EARED
OWL was in the yard on March 1.

Tom Smith reported two NORTHERN HARRIERS, several ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS,
SHORT-EARED OWL, HORNED LARKS, SNOW BUNTINGS, a pair of LAPLAND
LONGSPURS, and a few hundred RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, all in Wilkin County
on February 26.

Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Connie Cox, Gloria Nord, Larry Wilebski, Pat
Rice, Shelley Steva, and Tom Smith for their reports.
