Since closing my store at the end of the year I've had the  
opportunity to do a lot of exploring. Many first-of-year birds  
including Yellow-rumped warbler, E. Bluebird, Woodcock, Pintail,  
Gadwall, H. Merganser and Wood Duck.

Friday 4/23
At Agassiz NWR, Marshal County 26 Northern Pintail, 5 Gadwall, and  
one Prairie Falcon.
In Beltrami County from Hwy 89 west of Gun Dog WMA to Red Lake,
Bald Eagles-50+, 23 of these where concentrated in a 1/4 mile stretch  
of fields and woods.
Rough-legged Hawk-20+, 5 in the same area with the eagles
Red-tailed Hawk-11, 3 in the same area with the eagles
Northern Harrier-14
I also saw at least a dozen A. Kestrels on this trip and heard Killdeer.

Saturday 4/24
Birded Beltrami, Itasca, Cass, and Aitken County with Pat Rice and  
MaryLou Marchand for 36 species.
Mud Goose WMA in Cass County we found 2 Northern Shrike, one Eastern  
Bluebird and a River Otter napping on the ice.
In Grand Rapids at Pokegama Dam & Recreation Area we saw Ring-billed  
Gull, Common Goldeneye, Common and Hooded Merganser and Wood Duck  
along with Canada Geese. Flocks of Dark-eyed Junco.
In Grand Rapids, at the KAXE radio station on the Mississippi River  
we found Common Grackle and our first Yellow-rumped Warbler of the year!
Other birds seen on this trip included 2 more E. Bluebirds, Red- 
winged Blackbird, Red-bellied Woodpecker, and Trumpeter Swans. Heard  
Killdeer in several locations. Good hatches of Gnat/Midge?

Sunday 4/25
The Farm-Clearwater County south of Bagley
Flocks of Dark-eyed Junco arrived on Sunday, still good numbers of C.  
Redpoll, several dozen A. Goldfinch, a few Purple Finch.
Fly-overs included Killdeer, Trumpeter Swan and one skein of 36  
Tundra Swan.
At 8 PM - 2 American Woodcock performed aerial displays, but without  
peenting. At 8:10 one began peenting.
Also of note: first Zebra (jumping) Spider and first Mosquitos (3). A  
hatch of small moths was noticeable on the drive back to town at night.
