[mou] Question on Recording and Playing Bird Songs

I'm wondering if anyone can help me with a "taping" question. I would like
to be able to play and record bird songs in the field. In checking with
Best Buy, there weren't any iPod type devices that had a speaker loud enough
to project a distance in the field.
Can anyone recommend a device or combination of devices (preferably small!)
that could be used for both recording bird songs and playing back bird songs
in the field?
Any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated!
