Spring migration is spreading like a sunrise with most species having
already arrived in the southern portions of the area , and teasers of
most species being seen in the north. It is evident that the bulk of the
migration has not arrived in the far northern counties, but still
several species of warblers have been reported, and shorebirds are
finding the few areas of habitat that are available.
Ben Fritchman , birding with a group on International Migratory Bird
Day, found two unusual warblers in Todd County. A BLUE-WINGED WARBLER
was seen along 295th Ave about a half mile south on MN 27, and one was
seen east of Burtrum at the intersection of 341st Ave and 168th St. A
CERULEAN WARBLER was discovered in Oak Ridge WMA on the east side of
341st Ave. If you want to look for it park at the pull off and walk east
towards the lake. A CLARK'S GREBE was observed at Lake Osakis.
In Hubbard County, Patrick Beauzay found several WOOD THRUSHES in the
Paul Bunyan State Forest north of Akeley on May 12. Directions are to
take MN 64 north to East Gulch Forest Road, and turn west one mile.Other
species seen included HERMIT THRUSH, VEERY, and OVENBIRD.
Dan and Sandy Thimgan in Otter Tail County on May 12 included GREAT
EGRETS, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, UPLAND SANDPIPER, MARBLED GODWIT,
WILSON'S PHALAROPE, 11 species of warbler , and 11 species of sparrow on
their list.
In Clay County on May 12, Bob O'Connor reported RED-BREASTED MERGANSER
along CR 37 two miles east and 2 miles north of Hitterdahl, an OSPREY at
Lake Fifteen, and PHILADELPHIA VIREO and MOURNING WARBLER at Moorhead's
Gooseberry Park. Patrick Beauzay found a HENSLOW'S SPARROW at Bluestem
Prairie near Glyndon on May 13. On May 15, Bob O'Connor reported 15
species of warbler in Clay County including a CANADA WARBLER.
Beau Shroyer in Becker County reported GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS at Hamden Slough
NWR on May 12.
On May 9, Nathaniel Emery reported a YELLOW RAIL on the Pembina Trail
Preserve in Polk County, and elsewhere in the county , PALM WARBLER, and
YELLOW WARBLER. There was a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER on private property
adjacent to the Glacial Ridge Project. Katie Haws observed UPLAND
SANDPIPER and MARBLED GODWIT at Glacial Ridge NWR on May 13. On May 12,
Donna and Leon Thoreson reported RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, WARBLING VIREO,
SWAINSON'S THRUSH, and ORCHARD ORIOLE among others.

AMERICAN AVOCETS at South Pool, a total of 68 HUDSONIAN GODWITS , and 48
DUNLINS. A BALD EAGLE pair is on a nest in Parker Pool. Four WESTERN
