Returned yesterday from three nights of base camping on Caribou Lake (west of
Pine Lake, south of Clearwater Lake) in the BWCA. Lots of warblers in the
cedars and white pines along the shore, but they are hard to identify when
paddling past in a canoe. Highlights were a resident Merlin chasing a Blue Jay
and the warblers, a group of Turkey Vultures searching for a night roost, a
Three-toed Woodpecker, a Belted Kingfisher, and heard (but not seen) a Barred
Owl and a Northern Saw-whet Owl. And, of course, no Boundary Waters trip is
complete without Common Loons (adults and juveniles) and juvenile and adult
Bald Eagles.
